Fall 2013: Selection
Impaction: SJSU receives a greater number of applications from
eligible students than we have the space to admit. Therefore,
meeting the minimum requirements may not be enough to gain
admission to SJSU.

SB 1440
7
•
The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (SB 1440 – Padilla), signed into
legislation on September 29, 2010, enables the California Community Colleges and
California State University to collaborate on the creation of Associate in Arts Degree
(AA) and Associate in Science (AS) Degree transfer programs. This new law
requires community colleges to grant an associate degree for transfer to a student
once a student has met specified general education and major requirements for the
degree. Upon completion of the associate degree, the student is eligible for transfer
with junior standing into the California State University (CSU) system.
•
Students are given guaranteed admission into the California State University (CSU)
system, and further are given priority consideration when applying to a particular
program that is similar to the student’s community college major. The law prohibits
the CSU from requiring a transferring student to repeat courses similar to those
taken at the community college that counted toward their associate degree for
transfer.
•
Please note that a student with an AA-T or AS-T is not guaranteed admission to
SJSU, but into the CSU system.

SB 1440 – Selection Criteria

•
Students submit an application and must chose AA-T or AS-T designation
on the SJSU application in order to receive additional consideration in the
admission process.
•
All applicants run through auto-admit process in February.
•
AA-T or AS-T applicants are identified and given a .10 GPA increase to
their cumulative GPA.
•
Applicants must apply for their AA-T or AS-T degrees from the community
college.
•
If applicant is provisionally admitted to the university, their AA-T or AS-T

Fall 2013 Appeals
•
SJSU reviews each applicant's record thoroughly in the admission process
and admission decisions are rarely reversed. The admissions process is
completely objective, based on each applicant's self-reported academic
qualifications on the CSU Application for Admission and official transcripts
received by published deadlines.
•
Appeals to admission decisions must be submitted within 15 days of the
denial notification. All appeals will be reviewed and responded to within
three weeks.
•
SJSU does not set aside space in our class for students who appeal
admission decisions. Every denied application has been reviewed for
maximum consideration. Therefore, for an appeal to have merit, it must bring
to light new academic information (send official documentation of new
information to eval@sjsu.edu). Grades received in the current academic year
are not a basis for an appeal or the reversal of a decision.
•
SJSU does not consider appeals to missed deadlines, no matter how
compelling the circumstances.
