ABB acquires full ownership of CGM to provide collaborative facilities of the future Control room design and intelligent ergonomic technology enhances leading distributed control system (DCS) offering ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has acquired the remaining shares of CGM AB to become its sole shareholder. Sweden-based CGM provides modern control room design and ergonomic solutions for maximum control room operator effectiveness. The acquisition provides ABB with access to the latest technology for enhancing the control room environment, providing advanced functionality and improved safety through optimized design. Intelligent control room design helps to boost productivity, reduce downtime and reduce workplace injury. Optimized control rooms are increasingly important in the next phase of industrial automation, facilitating the widespread use of smart technology, intelligent machines and networked processes. This acquisition enables ABB’s cutting edge control system technologies to be used in environments that are optimized for human operators, creating smart, ergonomically designed workspace solutions that promote collaboration, productivity and engagement. It is thought that nearly 80 percent of plant downtime is preventable, and that 50 percent is due to operator error. Even the most skilled and dedicated workers can get tired, bored or distracted, increasing the risk of mistakes. CGM creates working environments that engage, engross and empower the operator, focusing their attention on the job while eliminating distractions. Injuries, such as those caused by repetitive strain, are also reduced through improving the ergonomic quality and comfort of the workspace. “By combining ABB's control system with CGM’s control room design and equipment, operators will have the best possible working environment from which to maximize efficiency and productivity,” says Ilpo Ruohonen, Managing Director of ABB’s Control Technologies business unit. “This offering strengthens our control system portfolio and contributes to the evolving Internet of Things, Services and People.” CGM employs 54 people and is based in Borås and Ryssby, Sweden. CGM will be part of ABB’s Control Technologies business unit. “We look forward to being an even more integral part of ABB and to contributing our know-how and premium solutions for efficient operator environments," says Pierre Schäring, CEO of CGM. “By combining control room design with human factor knowledge and the latest control system technologies, we are proud to contribute in providing one of the safest, most intelligent collaboration platforms on the market.” ABB is a supplier of power and automation products, systems, solutions and services to the oil, gas and chemicals industry, with a complete and integrated scope of supply capability that ranges from plant electrification to control, optimization and safety systems, smart field instrumentation, analyzers and telecommunications systems.
