How to…
Write a great job advertisement
Write a great job advertisement
Recruitment professionals all agree that the one thing recruiters most often get wrong is the advert
text. They simply don't put in the effort to write good job adverts.
You are writing a job advertisement: sell the job, the salary and benefits, sell the prospects and sell
your school. We want you to be able to attract the best candidate possible for your job as quickly as
possible. To help you write a compelling job advert, we’re giving you some handy hints and advice to
make sure you have a great advert to attract great applicants.
‘Employers…must present themselves in a way that will attract the jobseeker, and build a relationship
with them so that they want to apply for a role. This can be done by creating a content-rich website
that is interactive and interesting…and by making the site quick and easy to use, so that jobseekers
can find the information they want within three or four clicks. Finally, the application process should be
as simple and quick as possible.’

Top tips

First impressions count
Your advert is a candidate’s first impression of you. Attract the best candidates by making
your advert clear, concise and easy to apply for.

Think like a Job Seeker
A good advert attracts good candidates and job seekers are evaluating job opportunities
against a shopping basket of personal criteria. Read through your job information from their
perspective. Will the message draw them in to apply?

What to include in your text
The main part of your advert should include an overview of the school, the role, closing
date/time, interview dates and a safer recruiting statement. Keep the advert to fewer than 700
words and include keywords to make your job searchable.

Make your school stand out
Emphasise unique characteristics about your school to catch the candidates’ eye and sell
your job. Also make sure you tailor school information to match job role. For example if
recruiting for a ‘Design and Technology Teacher’ and your school is a specialist Design and
Technology school, be sure to mention this.
Advert structure
Use the information below to structure your job posting, then transfer the information to eteach.com.

Full school name and institution type.

Catch the candidate’s eye with a short phrase or description at the top
of your advert.
eg ‘over-subscribed’ / ‘award winning’ / ‘forward thinking’.

Avoid jargon. Simplify language and choose search engine friendly
descriptions.
*Check out our keywords guide featured below.

Keep this clear and concise.

Make it searchable with popular keywords to improve your online
advertising.
*Check out our keywords guide featured below.

Be specific about role type. Where possible, avoid using ‘Other’.

Candidates only want the main details about the job. Try to keep to a
maximum of 700 words.

Check spelling, punctuation and grammar for accuracy.

Be specific to win their trust. Jobseekers can be sceptical about generic
terms used in adverts. Ensure all required elements are requested here
e.g. DBS check.

Keep it professional and avoid using humour.

Check that your advertisement grabs attention – sell your job!
Location

Always specify the town and consider mentioning a well-known place or
landmark nearby.
Salary

Specify the salary in £s. Alternatively, if you do not wish to disclose this
put MPS (Main Pay Scale). If the position is part-time, put the ACTUAL
salary, not the FTE.

State any benefits your school can offer. eg. an onsite nursery where
teachers can send their children.

If the role is specialist and you require only the highest quality
applicants, ensure you are prescriptive in your specification.

You may want to be less specific if you are looking for a greater volume
of CVs.

Determine the ‘Necessary’ vs. ‘Desirable’ skills, including whether
NQT’s will be considered.

Additional
information

Take the time to promote your school. Don’t just copy information from
your school’s website.

Emphasise what is unique about your school and always mention its
achievements.

In the first couple of sentences include information about the type of
school including, where it is, current staffing levels and why the opening
has occurred.

Use the opportunity to advertise your Talent Pool to candidates too;
even if they’re not right for this vacancy, they could be perfect for a
position in the future

Select one application route only.
Consider using the new Eteach Online Application System for one easy
application form and ability to view applicant’s information in one view.

If you choose a different method, ensure your details on how to apply
are easy to follow and state the documentation applicants must supply.

Put in contact details (incl. name, telephone number and email
address) and a ‘Call to action’.

Detail the time and date the job application closes, it’s a legal
requirement.

If you wish to, why not add a ‘Letter from the Headteacher' or some
Department information to set the scene for your candidates.
Making your job advert searchable
Over 65% of jobseekers start their job hunt on search engines, and the majority that use Eteach.com
tend to search the job title first followed by the location/area.
To capture this growing audience, you need to ensure your job advert is optimised for this. We’re sure
you’ve heard of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) before, and it’s not as tricky as it sounds.
It’s simply a case of knowing the best keywords to include, to easily attract the greatest response,
helping the best candidates find your advertisement. We’ve even taken out the hard work, and a list of
the top keywords for the education sector are included below.
How to incorporate keywords for SEO

Job title
So how much of a difference does the job title actually make? A huge difference!
According to Google, ‘Maths Teacher’ is 20 times more popular a search term compared to
‘Teacher of Mathematics’. Whereas ‘English Teacher’ is searched for 20 times more than
‘Teacher of English’.
Search through our keywords featured below, and choose the most relevant and most
searched for term for your advert to make a huge impact on the level of exposure your advert
receives.

Job description
The first 150 words are the most important. Think about the terminology and words you would
search for if you were looking for a new career move. Particularly think about maximising the
terms you think they’ll want to know e.g. Subject, Job title and Location. Job adverts stating
the actual location generate 3 times the responses of those that don’t.
Using popular searched for terms will have a significant positive impact on the visibility of your
vacancy and therefore generate more views and ultimately applications. Carry out a search
for the role that you’re advertising using Eteach, research similar job postings to see what
phrases other recruiters use, then include in your advert.
Making these simple changes, will have a huge overall impact on your recruitment and could
make all the difference in finding a good or great candidate.
