Classroom based module of lectures to set students’ knowledge
and experience into a theoretical framework and develop analytical
skills by interpreting the effect of British law. Delivered over
semester two.
This module will enable students to differentiate between different
types of law and court proceedings; evaluate legislation which
enables Police powers and understand the English criminal justice
system from arrest to conviction including the Military justice
system.

Students are aware of the legal framework and constraints
which apply to the Police service.
Students can relate theory to practice and develop the ability to
interpret and apply law.
Students develop an understanding of the legal processes
used in English Law.
Learning outcomes/
objectives
By the end of the module learners will be able to:
LP1 Differentiate between and explain different types of law and
court proceedings.
LP2 Evaluate the legislation which enables Police Powers and
constraints.
LP3 Explain the mechanism by which offenders are brought from
arrest to sentence trial in the English Criminal System.
LP4 Critically analyse the Military Justice System.

Types of law-Military and Civilian , Common and Statute, Civil
and Criminal

PACE, Public Order Acts, Powers of arrest, Armed Forces Act,
Powers of Service Police and non-home office forces

Civil Contingencies and Emergency Powers, Terrorism Act.

Offences and courts, sentencing guidelines, powers of courts

Criminal and Court Martial processes

Appeal courts, reasons for appeal and recent judgements

International Legal Systems

1. Exam with prepared notes on the different types of law and
explain how they are brought to effect. Identify and contrast
different court proceedings in criminal and civil law. Analyse the
Military justice system including consideration of the Human
Rights Act. 50% LP1, LP4
2. Essay on the legislation that provides Police powers and the
process from arrest to court including consideration of the
special conditions of terrorist offences. 50% PL2, LP3 (2000
words)
