Students are aware of the legal framework and constraints which apply to the Police service. Students can relate theory to practice and develop the ability to interpret and apply law. Students develop an understanding of the legal processes used in English Law. Learning outcomes/ objectives By the end of the module learners will be able to: LP1 Differentiate between and explain different types of law and court proceedings. LP2 Evaluate the legislation which enables Police Powers and constraints. LP3 Explain the mechanism by which offenders are brought from arrest to sentence trial in the English Criminal System. LP4 Critically analyse the Military Justice System. Content Types of law-Military and Civilian , Common and Statute, Civil and Criminal PACE, Public Order Acts, Powers of arrest, Armed Forces Act, Powers of Service Police and non-home office forces Civil Contingencies and Emergency Powers, Terrorism Act. Offences and courts, sentencing guidelines, powers of courts Criminal and Court Martial processes Appeal courts, reasons for appeal and recent judgements International Legal Systems Classroom based over one Semester, mixture of lectures, seminars, discussions and consideration of cases to develop students’ critical thinking skills.
