Gay Marriage and Gay Parenting
Discrimination and inequality are barriers that suffocate people in our society. The act
of prohibiting the gays to be married and adopt children is reinforcing discrimination and
inequality toward individuals. In “What is wrong with gay marriage” by Katha Pollit, fight the
idea of gay marriage being unnecessarily a controversy in the society and the myth that says
marriage is supposed to be between a man and a women. She exposes and debunks all the
shadows behind the marriage we had from the past and still have in the present time. A
contradictory approach has been made by Charles Colson in “Gay marriage: societal suicide”
where he states that gay marriage and adoption would be detrimental for traditional family.
Everybody should accept gay to be married and adopt children to improve the society and make
the world a better place.
How marriage between the same genders can be suicidal for the society? Katha Pollitt
showed us a different prospective of heterosexuals marriage. “An arranged marriage, forced
marriages, child marriages, marriages predicated on the subjugation of women__gay marriage is
like a fairy tale romance compared with most chapters of the history of wedlock.” (page549).
The way some marriages are set up showed us how controversial a Union between men and
women can be. It’s not a problem for the society since it is happening between a man and
women. Right now, the problem is the lack of love, commitment and stability. The gay couple
wants to be married because of love, affection and stability matters more for them. If not they
would have married the opposite gender despite knowing they could not be happy. There is
absolutely no point staying in a relationship where stability is not guaranteed. Everyone knows
that love cannot be suicidal for the society.
People also believe that children could be influenced by gay couples. These people only
point out the negative influences which I believe being gay is not negative. In” The Problem of
gay Parenting” by Pui Man Wong, the author is convinced that gay adoption has negative effects
on children. He states “In a homosexual household, not only is one of the sexes missing, but the
children are confronted with abnormal sexuality being presented by a norm. Children might be
confused about their sexuality.” The author of this article might not know that being gay is
natural, and there is no way that could happen even if they wanted to influence them. We should
think about children from straight families who are gay which proves that gay parents are not the
cause. We cannot choose to be gay or straight, it just happens. Eventually, the children would
find their own sexual orientation whether it is being hetero or homo. Denying the right of gay
parenting is an act of inequality because he is clearly stating that heterosexual parents are better
than homosexual parents without considering the amount of dysfunctional heterosexual parents
we have out there.
People are stuck on traditional beliefs from earlier years. A family consists of love and
commitment not obligatory about a man or woman who are married. A similar thought was
approached by Colson where he tells that a family should consist of a married mother and father.
“The family led by a married mother and father, is the best available structure for both child
rearing and cultural health.” (Page 556) These conservative ideas or beliefs are out of date
because they are myths. There are a lot of children in orphanages who are craving for a father or
a mother to love them. They would win the lottery if they got adopted by two mothers or two
fathers. It does not mean that children in heterosexual household are unhappy nor am I stating
that it is best for them to be in a homosexual one. I am opening opportunity for children to know
what it is to be stable and being loved by someone.
The role of the government is to improve the citizen’s lifestyle. They want to make sure we
follow laws and have a fair treatment. It seems like gay couples are not included in this so called
fair treatment. In a speech at the Liberty University by Former governor of Massachusetts Mitt
Romney, took his stance against gay marriage once again. He said: “As fundamental as these
principles are, they may become topics of democratic debate. So it is today with the enduring
institution of marriage. Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.” The
homosexuals have equal rights like everyone and should have the right to choose who they want
to marry. Members of the government are discriminating the gays as individuals by imposing
unfair laws. Our main goal in life is to find happiness. If some people find theirs by marrying the
same genders, let it be the way it is because we all deserve to be happy in this world.
The homosexual couples should definitely be able to marry and adopt children to make
their own family. Charles Colson stands behind his conservatives ideas where he believes in
traditional families. Katha Pollitt point already proves him how loose and little acquainted
marriage could be. Why forbidding the ones who would make a change by bringing real love and
stability? Similarly, Pui Man wong says gay parenting will leave a negative effect on the children
which is entirely false. In addition, members of the government are trying to get rid of
discrimination by discriminating and treating unequally gay’s individuals. We need to put
ourselves in the position of gays to decide if they deserve what they are dealing with. People like
that push them farther in the closet. The outcome of our act could lead them to suicide,
psychological problems and deep depression.
