Yes sir All right, can anyone of you define me what is science? ( Expected answer) Science is a study of scientific truths and discovering new things through observation and experimentation. ( Tr. Reinforces for the answer) How many branches are there under science? There are three sir What are they? Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 35 Mins LESSON DEVELOPMENT (Tr. Outlines the lesson and write on the board) Today we are going to learn about definition of biology, Students take notes growth and existence of biology, branches of biology and applications of biology. Can you tell me what does Biology mean? Expected answers are: i) study of animals and plants ii) study of trees and flowers Very Good. Animals, plants, flowers and trees come under living beings. So biology is the study of living being. (In Greek terms bios = life, logos = study) Do you have any idea how biology came into existence? Expected answers are: i) During our great great grant parent’s time. ii) During the evolution of the earth Good try. Actually nobody knows when the study of biology exactly began. But it is believed that the study of biology began during the primitive man came into existence. It was Greeks who were the pioneers of the study of biology. The pioneer of biology was Aristotle who first studied about the sufficient detail of animals. He was given the title “father of Biology”. There was another person called Theophrastus who studied detail about plants and he was given the title “father of Botany”. Hippocrates was the first person to study about medicine and he was awarded the title “father of Medicine”. Any doubts? No sir Again listen carefully and copy the note from the board. Special kinds of organisms: Bacteriology: study of bacteria Virology: study of viruses Mycology: study of fungi Entomology: study of insects Ichthyology: study of fishes Herpetology: study of lizards,snakes,etc Ornithology: study of birds In terms of the approach on studying it Anatomy: study of gross structure of an organism Morphology: study of form and structure of plants and animals ( both internal and external) Histology: study of minute body that is visible only through microscope Cytology: study of structure and function of plant and animal cells Physiology: study of functions and activities of organisms and its parts Embryology: study of formation of embryo of plants and animals Taxonomy: science of naming, grouping and classifying plants and animals Eugenics: science which aims to improve the human race through controlled heredity.
