Did you learn science in the lower classes?
Yes sir
All right, can anyone of you define me what is science?
( Expected answer)
Science is a study of
scientific truths and
discovering new things
through observation and
experimentation.
( Tr. Reinforces for the answer)
How many branches are there under science?
There are three sir
What are they?
Biology, Chemistry and
Physics.

LESSON DEVELOPMENT
(Tr. Reinforces and thanks for the answer).
Please be attentive and write it in your notebook. Of the
three branches of the science, I will be teaching you
Biology.
(Tr. Outlines the lesson and write on the board)
Today we are going to learn about definition of biology,
Students take notes
growth and existence of biology, branches of biology
and applications of biology.
Can you tell me what does Biology mean?
Expected answers are:
i)
study of animals
and plants
ii)
study of trees
and flowers
Very Good. Animals, plants, flowers and trees come
under living beings. So biology is the study of living
being.
(In Greek terms bios = life, logos = study)
Do you have any idea how biology came into existence?
Expected answers are:
i)
During our great
great grant
parent’s time.
ii)
During the
evolution of the
earth
Good try. Actually nobody knows when the study of
biology exactly began. But it is believed that the study of
biology began during the primitive man came into
existence. It was Greeks who were the pioneers of the
study of biology. The pioneer of biology was Aristotle
who first studied about the sufficient detail of animals.
He was given the title “father of Biology”. There was
another person called Theophrastus who studied detail
about plants and he was given the title “father of
Botany”. Hippocrates was the first person to study about
medicine and he was awarded the title “father of
Medicine”.
Any doubts?
No sir
Again listen carefully and copy the note from the board.
( Tr writes on the board)
Students listen and copy the
Biology is divided in terms of;
note from the boars
i)
Major kinds of organisms
ii)
Special kinds of organisms
iii)
The approach on studying it.
Major kinds of organisms:
Botany: the study of plants
Zoology: study of animals
Human biology: the study of man as living organism and
his relationship with other organisms.
Special kinds of organisms:
Bacteriology: study of bacteria
Virology: study of viruses
Mycology: study of fungi
Entomology: study of insects
Ichthyology: study of fishes
Herpetology: study of lizards,snakes,etc
Ornithology: study of birds
In terms of the approach on studying it
Anatomy: study of gross structure of an organism
Morphology: study of form and structure of plants and
animals ( both internal and external)
Histology: study of minute body that is visible only
through microscope
Cytology: study of structure and function of plant and
animal cells
Physiology: study of functions and activities of
organisms and its parts
Embryology: study of formation of embryo of plants and
animals
Taxonomy: science of naming, grouping and classifying
plants and animals
Eugenics: science which aims to improve the human race
through controlled heredity.
Now we have learned a lot about biology. Can someone
tell us some of the application of biology?
Great answer. Now keeping the application of biology in
the mind, can anyone of you tell us how biology will
help you in your day to day life?
Very Good class.
5 Mins
Expected answers are:
i)
agriculture
ii)
Treating sick
animals
iii)
Conservation of
forest
iv)
Healthy lives
Expected answers are:
i)
Growing more
food
ii)
Necessary for
certain carriers.
iii)
Making us
conscious
citizens
CLOSURE
Can anyone summarize what we have learned today?
Today we learned about
what is biology, growth and
existence of biology,
branches of biology and
applications of biology.
Excellent answer.
Can you define what cytology is?
Very good.
It is a study the structure
and functions of plants and
animals cells.
As homework, please read pages 12, 13 & 14. I will ask
you questions in the next class. Did you get my
instructions?
Yes sir
Thank you class
Thank you sir
