ACADEMIC

Agincourt C.I. is a diverse community with academics as our common language. This year, as part of our Literacy and Numeracy initiative, we provided after school programs for Mathematics and Science, Mondays to Thursdays. In addition, we introduced

Numeracy, Literacy and French programs on Saturday morning. These programs were well attended and our goal is to continue with these initiatives next year. Thank you to Ms. Milderbraith, Ms Charalambous, Ms. Dalakas, Ms. Rakita and Mr. Espie for your commitment and leadership with these programs.

This year, we also introduced the 3 part Credit Completion form, in an effort to support students whose credit may be at risk and to communicate with parents. Our goal is to increase the credit completion rate among our Grade 9 and 10 students, by 5%.

As part of our Director’s Years of Action, effective parent and community participation is a system priority. To increase parent participation and continue to maintain the excellent relationship between our community and Agincourt C.I., we will have our first

Meet the Teacher event on Wednesday, Sept. 17 th . This will be a wonderful opportunity for parents to make first contact with their child’s teacher, in an informal and collegial setting. There will be a

This year, in the classrooms, the Math Department took giant steps in progressing with technology, as blackboards were replaced with whiteboards, and all math classrooms had access to LCD projectors, document cameras, computers and/or laptops, and iPads to assist in and enhance math instruction.

As for academic highlights, the AP Calculus students continue to perform admirably on their universal exams, and the trial run with the AP Statistics course was successfully completed, allowing us to follow through next year with the real deal.

Outside of the classroom, several math students participated in a plethora of math contests offered by various universities and math institutions, and without fail, in every contest entered, there were numerous students who earned accolades and honourable mentions, and every contest result was accompanied with a medal.

This year was awesome for Agincourt Science. Some highlights were the visits to our grade 11

Biology classes by the “Animal Lady” and students had a chance to carry around a python and other rare animals. Rogers TV covered our annual Rube Goldberg contest and our students were able to show off the amazing projects they created. Our students won a first place and a second place award in the Ryerson Engineering rocket design competition. Matt and Mitra won gold in the Science fair and represented ACI at the Canadian championships. Many of our students placed among the top students in Canada (and internationally) in a variety of Science and Engineering competitions. We are also very excited about the new computer probes that students get to use in our senior chemistry courses to design and carry out their own labs. We proud of the work that all of our students did in all of our classes and we are looking forward to next year!

The Ministry of Education has granted Agincourt CI with the Specialist High Skills Major in Business.

The program will commence September 2014 and there are already 28 students enrolled. This province-wide initiative provides opportunities for students of all pathways to enrich their high school career through experiential learning, additional certifications and reach ahead programs.

Students enrolled in the program will graduate with a special Red Seal on their OSSD in addition to work experience and specialized training. The goal of the program is to have students "work-ready" in their area of interest and to give them a competitive advantage upon entering university, college or the workforce.

This year was another great year for ACI’s technological education and computer science programs. We won the

Canadian Automotive Skills competition at the Canadian International Autoshow for the second year in a row making our two winners (Timothy Leung and Muhammad Roheemun) the Canadian champions. Our FIRST robotics team created a robot that could compete at a high level for this year’s game but due to an unforeseen rule violation we were not as successful as we could have been. The team and spectators still filled a bus that took them to the University of Ontario for our regional event. The VEX robotics team enjoyed the competition at Woburn Collegiate in November where we entered not one, but two robots to battle against teams from 56 other schools. Our junior Computer Science students entered the Canadian Computing Competition at the

University of Waterloo and five were crowned Metro Toronto Champions (Yanjun Zhang, Varnan Sarangian, Andrew

Jiang, Wentao Chen and Adrian Ensan). With the depth and wealth of knowledge available from our many talented students and teachers, ACI’s tech department should produce more champions next year. Have a great summer ACI.

CHARACTER

Agincourt’s green, white and… PINK!

On Wednesday, April 9 th Agincourt C.I. temporarily put aside it’s traditional green and white for the

International Day of Pink: a day to stand up against bullying, discrimination, homophobia and transphobia. The Gay Straight Alliance and the Student Action Team worked together to run the event, which included guest speakers from the Get Real Movement, and PFLAG, staff and student led workshops and a lunch-time “ACI Goes Pink!” fair.

The focus of this celebration was to show staff and students that A.C.I. is a welcoming and safe place for everyone. Over 80% of our staff and students arrived on April 9 th wearing pink; nearly 500 of them wearing bright Agincourt t-shirts that stated, “labels are for t-shirts, not people”, which were sold by students in the days leading up to the event. Students then spent the day learning about how to confront homophobia in the halls and current issues in the LGBTQ community. By far though, the most amazing thing about Agincourt’s Day of Pink is that it has become more than just a single event; not a day goes by without seeing a staff member or student wearing a bright pink ACI tshirt, reminding us of inclusive environment we strive for at Agincourt.

During the month of May the senior drama students under the direction of Mr. Hertel organized antibullying workshops for grade 5 students from 18 elementary schools in the ER19 family. These workshops consisted on educating students and creating anti-bullying skits to be performed for the grades 1-3. This FOS initiative involved 25 secondary students, 575 grade 5 students and 1900 grade

1-3 students. Agincourt students helped spread the message that bullying in not ok and that bullying stops here.

Student Wellness has always been a focus at A.C.I. but this year we ramped up our efforts to reach students in new ways.

In the fall, Grade 9 students were learning about research and topics around mental illness through library lessons, did the Terry Fox Run and participated in the leadership retreat.

In the winter, the school added 90 new books on topics that addressed

Health and Wellness. Mentors continued to help grade 9 students prepare for events and upcoming assessments.

In the spring, the school hosted a fabulous lunch and learn with psychologist, David Shwartzbein, to discuss stress management techniques.

Students participated in International Day of Pink and distributed excellent handouts on Coping with Stress from CAMH and the Heart and Stroke

Association. Intro to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology students completed a mental health campaign meant to reduce stigma toward mental illness. These students produced top quality information videos, posters, comics and educational products. Their videos were shown in class and on the screen in the main hallway.

Most recently, students completed the Ottey Walk and had an excellent stress busting day at Carnival. We are on our way to a healthier and stronger ACI community .

We could not have been more proud of the accomplishments and events the SAC executive, and the student body have done! One of the highlights is the Leadership Retreat! Homeform reps and students that showed incredible leadership honed their skills at this 3 day camp. From the food to the games to the unforgettable memories, the Leadership Retreat could not have been better!

October 31st, the scariest date of the year (well, maybe other than exam time) came, and the SAC was hard at work to put on an excellent haunted house for the school! The rest of the week was spent setting up the haunted house, putting up the props, and making ourselves look as scary as possible. Even though we were stepped on a couple of times (ouch), it was worth it to see the scared and excited faces of the students that walked into our house!

After weeks of hard work, the SAC executive put their blood and tears into Semi Formal: Love and Gamble, and planned each detail right down to the very colour of the tablecloths. Promposals, birthdays, prizes, dancing, and food! Lots and lots of food! It was definitely an amazing night.

The SAC this year began a new tradition! Running Lancers, the school’s first ever week-long picture scavenger hunt, was a huge success. Our tasks were crazy and difficult (from eating donuts with your gym teacher to sitting in a police car), but the participants were all troopers and accomplished them. We hope you had fun!

The Spirit Winners’ Gourmet Lunch Celebration was another first annual event. This was a reward for top junior (2H) and senior classes (3P) with the most spirit points. But it wasn’t just these classes that showed spirit. Thank you to everyone for your school spirit, from International Day of

Pink to our spirit week! You are all winners.

Carnival was absolutely amazing. The floats were set up, and we fed the entirety of the school with hamburgers, bananas, and juice! The students enjoyed the various activities made possible by all the different councils and the SAC. It was a great day of relaxing, before the reality of exams! We just want to say thank you to all those that made the SAC events happen during this year. Without all of you, the SAC would not have any motivation to plan any of these activities! Because of your spirit and your support, we’ve managed to, hopefully, make your year a little better.

Have a great summer! Jasmine Shek & Sunny Zheng

ENGAGEMENT

GO LANCERS!!!

What an amazing year for Agincourt Athletics!! This year has been an absolute stellar year, with over 400 student athletes competing in 30 different teams, over three seasons. ACI athletes won 51 medals in the EAST region and

11 at the CITY Championships. The number of Championship banners hanging at ACI is a new record for the school. Silver medals in EAST region were won in JR Girls Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee A & B Team,

Coed Volleyball, SR Boys Soccer, while Gold medals were won by the following teams; JR Boys Volley Ball,

Indoor Soccer, SR Boys Basketball, Girls Varsity Soccer, Girls Softball, Swimming – Overall Boys, Open Girls and Open Boys, as well as Track and Field. ACI athletes also achieved success at the City Championships, winning the top prize in Jr Boys Volleyball, Coed Volleyball, Swimming and SR Boys Soccer.

In addition to those successes, we had 10 individual students and our SR Boys Soccer team represents ACI and the TDSB at the OFSAA Provincial Championships. AMAZING!!

Our outstanding achievements this year, is the result of the incredible dedication from our students, parents, coaches/teachers and administration that have put in 110% of their time and effort into Athletics.

CONGRATS ACI!!

Another successful season for the A.C.I. Drama Company is now in the books. In keeping with past years, two full-scale productions were presented to the A.C.I. community and a number of elementary schools, one in November and one in April.

The November production, “It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s… Nerdman?!” was a rocking spoof of the Superman comics. With hero, Clark Brent, ace reporter Lois Drane and Daily Asteroid editor Harry White, the cast of whacky characters battled evil in Petropolis and eventually revealed that the corrupt, overweight mayor of the city was responsible for all the crime and chaos. The mayor’s only defense when revealed was, “I was in a drunken stupor…”

Hmmm, art does indeed mirror life.

The April production, “Girl Talk” was a comedic, singing, dancing revue of the conversations that girls have about life, love and being a girl. Consisting of over twenty short scenes, two sparkling full-company dance numbers and a number of soloists singing audience favourites, “Girl Talk” was an artistic success with many accolades coming from the two enthusiastic audiences.

Congratulations to all members of the A.C.I. Drama Company and the Stage Crew for all their hard work and dedication to the success of these two productions. Special thanks as well to staff members, Mr. Hertel, Ms. Silverberg, Ms. Fairclough, Mr. Butash,

Mr. Tors, Ms. Hommel and retired staff member, Mr. Remigio for their continued support and contributions to the success of

Drama Company productions.

Once again it has been a busy and successful year for the Music Department.

An Agincourt Christmas, two nights of Accent on Agincourt, performances at

Commencement, the Awards Assembly, Junior Music Retreat,

Remembrance Day, the Provincial Legislature, Massey Hall, the Kaleid Vocal

Festival, Guitar Slam, as well as a full festival season, has kept students and teachers alike on their toes and energized all year. The Ontario Vocal

Festival, Ontario Strings Association, Ontario Band Association, Toronto

Kiwanis Music Festival, Ontario Music Festivals Association, GTA Jr. and Sr.

Invitational Band Festivals, and a trip to Chicago. ACI ensembles won several first and second place awards, as well as numerous Platinum, Gold, and Silver ratings at these festivals. Five ensembles were invited to send recordings to the provincial competition of the Kiwanis Music Festival. The

Madrigal Singers received an Honourable Mention, the Wind Symphony and

Concert Orchestra won second place awards, while the Men’s Chorus and North East Jazz won first place in their categories! The

Men’s Chorus also won the Ed Bolsby trophy for the best performance by a high school ensemble at the Toronto Kiwanis Festival, and will now compete at the National level of the competition. Stay tuned for news of those results this summer!
