Goals of Year 12

Western Australian Certificate of
Education

TAFE Entry.

University Entry - ATAR Australian
Tertiary Admission Rank calculated and
issued by TISC.

Awards - issued by Curriculum Council.
WACE Requirements
Breadth and Depth
 Complete at least 20 course units. Up to 10 course equivalents can
be from endorsed programs.
 Complete 4 units of English or Literature during Yr 11 and 12 (at
least two of these units must be in Year 12).
 In Year 12 study at least one pair of course units from each of List A
(arts/languages/social science) and List B
(mathematics/science/technology).
Achievement Standard
 Achieve a C grade average or better across the best 16 course units
of which at least 8 units must be completed in Year 12. Endorsed
programs and /or VET credit transfer can reduce the required
number of course units by up to 6 units.
English Language Competence
 Achieve a C grade or better in any Stage 1 or higher course unit in
English or Literature.
Exams for stage 2 and 3 courses, unless exempt.
EXAMINATIONS EXEMPTION
All students in their final year who are enrolled in Stage 2 or
3 units, sit the exam (unless exempt). Year 12 students who are enrolled
in more than 5 pairs of Stage 2 and/or Stage 3 course units and do not wish to sit the
external exam in their 6th or 7th course can apply for exemption. It is expected that students
will sit a minimum of 5 examinations.
A student will be exempt from sitting exams only if
they are:
 Enrolled to complete, in Year 12, at least 220 nominal
hours of VET (which must lead towards the achievement
of full or partial qualifications)… AND …

Enrolled in 3 or less Stage 2 and /or Stage 3 unit pairs.
NOTE:
The completion of an AQF VET
Certificate or 220 hours in Year 10
or 11 does not qualify a Year 12 student
for exam exemption.
WACE Exam EXEMPTIONS

WACE exam exemptions for students studying
VET and 3 or less Stage 2 or Stage 3 courses
must be applied in writing to the Curriculum
Council by 4th July.

leave it to the deadline.

TAFE Entry
Is Attaining WACE Enough?
To be competitive students taking a university
pathway should aim to score:
 Stage 3 courses - a ‘B’ (65% +) or higher
 Stage 2 courses - an ‘A’ (75% +).
Students aiming for a TAFE Certificate IV or
Diploma may need:
 ‘A’ grades
 National VET Qualification
 Work experience to be competitive.
INDIVIDUAL EXAM STUDENT CASE STUDY
The reason why students must put every possible effort into the exam!




STUDENT A
School Score = 54
Grade = C
Raw WACE Exam = 42
Scaled Score = 47




STUDENT B
School Score = 54
Grade = C
Raw WACE Exam = 67
Scaled Score = 58

Replicated across all WACE exams, Student A will produce an ATAR
of 54. No university directly admits students with this ATAR.
Competitive portfolio entry into some ECU courses will be the only
option available to this student.

Replicated across all WACE exams, Student B will produce an ATAR
of 73. This will create a wide range of opportunities for this student at
Curtin, Murdoch and ECU.
Important Dates




Change of Courses by Friday 9th March; after
this date ONLY after extenuating
circumstances.
Enrolments acknowledged by 3 August;

PRIVATE CANDIDATE





Students may wish to enrol in an examination as a
Private Candidate.
This means that they can’t have studied that course
at school or at S.I.D.E., although they may have
studied the Stage 1 course.
Only the examination mark counts towards ATAR.
Applications close 4th July (without late fee) and a
$35 cheque is payable to the Curriculum Council.
Forms are available from Ms. Pendlebury.
Late applications will be accepted until 3rd August
(an extra fee will apply).
Special Examination
Arrangements





For candidates who may be disadvantaged
in demonstrating their knowledge and skills
in the WACE exam.
The problem must relate to examination
situations.
Evidence provided must come from the
school, psychologist and medical
practitioner.
Apply for Special Examination Arrangements
- applications close 25 May. The college
must have them by 14 May.
See Ms. Pendlebury for further information.
Sickness/Misadventure

For circumstances beyond student’s control.

For temporary sickness - non permanent disability.

For sickness or misadventure occurring during or just prior to the exam.

The candidate is responsible for gathering the evidence.

Applications close 28 November.

Forms available from the exam centre ( or you can contact
Ms. Pendlebury).

Decision is final - appeal available on the process only.

If approved, the Curriculum Council calculates the examination mark using your
school assessment as a basis. The higher of the actual examination mark and
the calculated examination mark becomes the examination mark that is given to
you for that examination.
Revising For Exams
Two things that can interfere greatly with revision:
 Not starting early enough;
 Not knowing how to revise ( if unsure – seek
help/advise).
The Learning Support Advisor will visit all Yr 12 Mentor
classes to advise on study techniques.
A 6-week program of Study Skills will be run in the
weeks leading up to Semester 1 &2 exams.
General Revision Planning
Hints









REGULAR MEALS
REGULAR SLEEP
REGULAR EXERCISE
Know your best time to study.
Don’t spend too long on any one course.
Work in 45-50 minute sessions.
Do the “easy” things when you are getting tired
If there is not enough time – don’t leave out whole
sections .
Take it easy the night before an exam – don’t study
late, do light revision only, do some general
overview & diagrams.
