Assignment #1 1984 and Current Events Connection: 50 points In an effort for you to become a well rounded, knowledgeable individual, you will read the classic dystopian novel 1984 by George Orwell. You will need to purchase a hard copy of the novel (not electronic). As you read, mark the text for what you consider to be the most important moments in the novel. Because this novel proves more prophetic in 2013 than did it in the 1940’s, you will follow news coverage of 5 major news events which connect thematically to the novel. In essence, you should closely pay attention to the news over the course of the summer. Create an original organizer in which you illustrate the textual connection between different events in the novel and 5 different relevant news stories. **If you are confused about what constitutes a major news event please keep these criteria in mind: Location (the closer it is, the greater the impact on the reader), timelines, prominence (how well known the people are), conflict, novelty, human interest. For example, following the news surrounding national and global leaders is more important than following celebrities. Assignment #2 On Writing by Stephen King 25 points Read Stephen King’s On Writing. Engage in active reading. In addition, answer the following questions in paragraph or bulleted form as you read, or after you read, and be prepared to discuss during the beginning of the school year: o How do you currently view yourself as a writer? o What do you consider your strengths? Weaknesses? o After reading this book, how will you begin to think of yourself as a writer, even if you are not writing fiction? o Which “rules” are you guilty of breaking? Which rules will you now use in your own writing? o List at least five “ah-ha” moments.
