The “Case of Angela Cuevas”
iGraduate
Roadmap to Success
FIRST THINGS FIRST
The case study assumes that the student has:
• applied for admission online or in person,
• attended college orientation,
• taken college Math and English/ESL assessment
tests and has the results, and
• quick access to a college catalog and class
schedule
15
The “Case of Angela Cuevas”
iGraduate
Roadmap to Success
• Angela is interested in entering the field of
Early Childhood Education.
• Her job responsibilities and income will rise in
proportion to her level of college education:
– Certificate only
– AA/AS Degree
– BA Degree
Let’s see how that works in California.
16
PLEASE LOCATE THIS CHILD DEVELOPMENT MATRIX CHART
IN YOUR WORKBOOK
LET’S DISCUSS ANGELA’ EDUCATIONAL CHOICES IN LIGHT OF THIS MATRIX
17
(Resource Tab 6, #2 in your workbook)
ANGELA’S CHILD DEVELOPMENT MATRIX
iGraduate
Roadmap to Success
YOU WILL NOTICE TWO THINGS:
1.She can advance only so far without an
Associate’s Degree
2.An Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s
Degree allow Angela to advance up the
matrix sooner with less classroom
experience
18
If Angela wants a CERTIFICATE ONLY,
Her Roadmap Page 1 begins like this:
19
Her Major is Child Development (Certificate of Achievement)
20
She takes only these MAJOR courses for the Certificate (PG 3)
37 Units are required plus any Non Degree Applicable Prerequisites
21
IF Angela want to earn an ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE ONLY,
Her Road Map Page 1 begins like this:
22
AT PCC, Associate In Science Degree,
Departmental Major is Child Development
23
iGraduate
THE ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE REQUIRES:
Roadmap to Success
1. A minimum of 60 degree applicable units
2. Completion of a Certificate of Achievement
3. Completion of a minimum of 25 units of general
education courses listed on the “GE Progress
Tracker_Associate Degree Only”
4. Competency in Reading, Written Expression,
Math, and Diversity (see GE Progress Tracker)
24
The MAJOR courses are the same as the Certificate, but we now add a minimum of 25 degree
applicable general education course units (G.E. PROGRESS TRACKER)
We will see all of the tools in action as we look next at what is required for a BA Degree .
25
iGraduate
Roadmap to Success
In order to advance faster, Angela has decided
to earn an Associate Degree at PCC and transfer
to Cal State Northridge. There she will major in
Child and Adolescent Development.
Working together we fill put together a Road Map
to Success for her.
