It is a story that is realistic; concerns “recent” events; is told by a person who believes it is true; is usually spread orally or over the internet; is relevant to the average person; conveys basic fears, attractions, or anxieties; often contains the sinister, ironic, macabre, or bizarre; cannot be proven. Common Topics of Urban Legends Urban legends often include stories about animals, automobiles, hitchhikers, food horrors, famous people and their fans, crimes and scams, businesses and their products, accidents or mishaps, and school (particularly concerning tests and cheating). Oral Story/Urban Legend Retelling Assignment Directions: After researching urban legends, choose one (appropriate for school setting; story summary needs to be approved by Mrs. Eddington) to relate orally to the class as a retelling. Write a summary of the story as you would like to present it. Then plan your oral presentation. The structure should be as follows: 1. Introduce yourself, and state the topic or title of your story. Give any background information about the story that might be interesting. 2. Retell your story. See Story Retelling Rubric for expectations. Formats can be as follows: a. Present your story by yourself, with you as a storyteller or as a reporter. b. Present your story with one or two other people (no more than three in a group, period), each having a different story that is related to the other(s) in some way. Storytelling can be presented as a "conversation" between the participants. Each person should introduce self and story; transitions between stories that explain their connections will also be needed. 3. Conclude your presentation by explaining the history of the story, where/when/how it has appeared, or why you think this story is told. You could also mention other stories that are similar, especially those that may actually be true, or explain what about the story makes it an urban legend. Those working in a group should include at least two of the above elements. 4. Your presentation can also include a visual aid such as a PowerPoint, picture, item, or example. Extra credit points will be given for this (those in a group will share points, or the one who provided the visual aid will get the points). Points earned will be based on effort made. Due date: A signup sheet will be available to select a day to present. Your selected day will be your due date. Failure to be ready on selected day will result in a late grade, and you must then be ready to present on the next available day. If you are absent on your selected date, you must be ready to present at the next available time slot when you return.
