Supplies needed: I will provide a folder to each student. And you need to
bring a pencil or pen to class for any paper assignments. You will also need
headphones sometimes and you can borrow mine or bring your own.
Curriculum: We will be covering these topics:
1. Make a desktop personal folder and a bellringer document.
2. How to use our 8th grade class Blog for daily bellringers and links.
3. Digital Citizenship: Staying safe online, protecting your reputation and
personal information. Avoid online scams and phishing schemes.
4. Careers: discuss the 16 career clusters, research a career, write a cover
letter to apply for a job, create a resume, update your ILP.
5. Map My Future: an online simulation to understand how your level of
education can affect your future lifestyle.
6. Consumerism: learn about income, budgets, check stubs, writing a check
and deposit slips, and balancing a checkbook.
7. Financial Literacy Online Course. A 3 day course about managing money.
8. Excel Spreadsheets: Create spreadsheets and charts and graphs.
What I believe: In a computer class you learn by trying things yourself not
by asking the teacher or another student to do it for you. You will ALWAYS
have a handout with steps to follow along for any of my assignments so
there is no reason for you to feel lost. And as you know we read through the
handout and then I show you on the screen up front how to do something.
I expect everyone to have listened to and watched my instructions.
If you have a problem doing something please first try to figure it out for
yourself. If you get stuck after trying it yourself you may ask someone near
you to help. If no one near you can help you may then raise your hand to ask
me. This is called “3 before me.” 1. Try it yourself as best you can.
2. Look back at the handout. 3. Ask your neighbor. Me: Now you can ask
me, Ms. Hersel, by raising your hand.

You can sharpen your pencil once the class starts the assignment.

that day’s assignment. Or working on an assignment already started.
3. The last 3-4 minutes of class we have a class reflection written on paper.
This is our Exit Slip. (No Edmodo this year.)You will score yourself 3, 2, or

sentences about the target. I will collect these every Friday.

Consequences:
My consequence for misbehavior is silent lunch. If you get a warning for
doing something and then continue the behavior, you will get silent lunch. If
that still doesn’t quiet you down, I will send you out to the bench. Don’t be
talking when I am talking. Do your work when you are supposed to be doing
it. Don’t be on the wrong website. Don’t have your phone out. Don’t bother
anyone sitting near you.
If I give you silent lunch, I will then let your team of teachers know and I
will walk down to the cafeteria and let Mr. Harp and Mr. Walker know.
A little about Ms. Hersel: This is my 11th year here at HCMS. I was born in
Bryan, Texas, which is near Texas A&M University. I live in Carlisle in
Nicholas County on Lake Carnico. I have 4 grown children (3 sons and a
daughter) and 8 grandchildren (4 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. My two
oldest granddaughters are twins and they cheer for Pulaski County HS in
Somerset. They are freshmen.)
For fun I like to travel and I have been to every state except for Alaska. I
like to read and to use social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and
Snap Chat. I love doing fun things with my grandchildren like going to the
movies, out to eat and sledding in the winter. I have my Bachelor’s Degree
from Texas A&M and Eastern Kentucky University. I also have my
Master’s Degree and Rank 1 from EKU. I love comedies, dramas and
zombie tv shows and movies. I also enjoy reality tv such as Big Brother and
the Amazing Race. And I am a breast cancer survivor of 9 years.
First Assignment: You have a quiz over this syllabus. It is due tomorrow
and will be your first grade. We will trade and grade tomorrow so make
sure you answer each question and write/print neatly. If you happen to forget
to bring it tomorrow, I will give you until Thursday to turn it in. After that
it’s a 0 and no jeans.
