Goal Area 5: History and the Social & Behavioral Sciences Develop understanding of human societies and behaviors, and of the concepts, theories, and methods of history and the social sciences. Through the assessment of “Crime and Justice in America,” students will gain an enhanced understanding and perspective of documented historical developments, accounts, and figures relative to the progression of the professional field of criminal justice. Individual criminal behaviors, and how they affect society as a whole, will be defined and discussed (social science). Students will develop their abilities in analytical reading and reasoning, as well as comprehension and reflection skills. Areas of study include failures of the system to provide justice for all people (racial profiling, American-based concentration camps, excessive use of force, lynching (including the Duluth Lynching), child abuse/neglect, child sexual abuse, child labor, etc.), and the history and effectiveness of different components of the American Justice system (law enforcement, courts, institutional corrections, community-based corrections, etc.). 13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 5, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning outcomes (SLOs) below.
