Frequently Asked Questions: Employees changing from mid-month to month end pay dates Why is this change necessary? At present, the University processes three different payrolls mid-month. The nature of the midmonth payroll means that employees are paid two weeks in advance and two weeks in arrears. On recommendation from recent audits, the University will move all mid-month pay dates to month end, in alignment with the current Academic payroll. This will mean that all employees will be paid on the same date. Have the trade unions been consulted about the changes to the pay dates? Yes. When will I be paid? The change will be made over a period of six months starting in September 2015, when the pay date will move from the 15th to the 16th. Over the following months the pay date will move by a number of days until the end of the month is achieved in March 2016. The pay dates following the final midmonth payment on Friday 14th August 2015 are as follows: Wednesday 16th September 2015 Monday 19th October 2015 Friday 20th November 2015 Tuesday 22nd December 2015 Monday 25th January 2016 Friday 26th February 2016 Thursday 31st March 2016 From March 2016, employees will be paid on the last day of the month. Where this falls on a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday employees will receive payment on the last working day of the month. Can I change pay dates in one month rather than over the six months? Employees have the option of making the change in September 2015 and should email the Payroll Section no later than 14 August 2015 to request this at payroll@salford.ac.uk. Will I be issued with a new contract of employment? No. The Human Resources Team will send employees a letter confirming the change of payroll date and that the other terms and conditions of employment remain the same. What if anything, should I do as a result of the pay date change? Employees should review their personal finances including any financial commitments between the 15th and the end of the month, as they may wish to amend payment dates to align with the new pay date. Employees should make enquiries with their bank/building society and with the relevant organisations about changing the due dates of payments affected. If employees are starting new direct debits they may wish to consider which date will be best once their pay date has changed. Please note the University is not liable for any financial penalties resulting from these changes. However, claims will be considered where there has been an administrative charge imposed for moving a direct debit. This will only be considered where acceptable proof is supplied and can only be claimed once. Claims must be made in writing to the Payroll Section and accompanied by an original document confirming the charge.
