EXAMINATION REFORMS
AND
CONTINUOUS AND
COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION
Presented by
Mr. M.J. Siddiqui
Principal & HOI
WHY CONTINUOUS COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION
External Examinations
‘are largely inappropriate for the knowledge society of the 21st century and its need
for innovative problem solvers‘
 Evaluation of Scholastic learning only on marks.
 Ability of child not evaluated.
 Limited Techniques of Evaluation do not identify learner’s
level of attainment.
 Resulting in Pass/Fail.
 Causing frustration and humiliation .
DE – STRESSING EXAMINATION
• Examination has now become a kind of
pandemic which is affecting a student in
different ways and severity.
• Examinations put up a lot of stress on the
students for demonstrating their intelligence,
creativity, understanding and applications of
the concepts in a very short time interval of
two or three hours.
DE – STRESSING EXAMINATION
… contd
• Universities treat marks secured in Board
Examination as their admission criterion.
• Board test only its curriculum and not the
specific skills and aptitude required for any
particular course.
• This entire correlation between marks scored
in the Boards and admission to desired course
and college culminates into an extremely
stressful situation for teenagers.
DE – STRESSING EXAMINATION
… contd
• Teachers and parents need to first de – stress
themselves and leave examinations to the
children.
• Parents should take a positive attitude and tell
their children that “Yes, You can do it.”
• Self motivation works much better than
external motivation.
Silver linings
• The CBSE has been trying hard to implement
various measures like strengthening the internal
school based evaluation through Continous and
Comprehensive Evaluation.
• The introduction of Grading system in place of
marking system up to middle level is one of the
major steps of CBSE appreciated by all sections of
the society.
• It has reduced the stress and fear of examinations
among small kids and their parents
Silver linings
• It has been extended up to secondary level by
introducing school based evaluation.
• Semester system is introduced at school level
which will reduce the burden on the students.
This will further de-stress the student.
• The marking system is changed to gradation
system, which is more rational and scientific.
De – Stress the Stress, as it is a well known fact
that everybody performs better when he is
relaxed.
WHAT IS CONTINOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE
EVALUATION? (CCE)
It is process to provide holistic profile of the learner through
regular assessment of scholastic and co-scholastic domains of
development.
This scheme aims at making evaluation an integral part of
teaching – learning process.
The scheme focuses on all round development of personality of
the learners.
The scheme also envisages improving on – going teaching learning process by diagnosing the learning gaps and offering
corrective and enrichment input.
The CCE scheme brings about a paradigm shift from
examination to effective pedagogy.
HOW WOULD THE CCE SCHEME HELP STUDENTS?
It will reduce anxiety and stress which often builds up
if students are assessed only once through one – shot
examination at the end of year.
 It will result higher level of learning due to timely
diagnosis of learning gaps and remedial intervention.
 It will help the learners to develop holistically in the
term of different domains of their personality.
It will shift focus from need for learning to love for
learning.

Operational Modalities 1
• Grades on a 9 point scale will be awarded.
• Performance will be assessed using conventional numerical marking and same
will be converted into grades.
• The CBSE will issue a statement of Subject wise performance i.e. Grade Sheet
(NO MARKS) for class X students studying in secondary schools
• In case a student leaves the CBSE system after having completed the Final
Formative and Summative Assessments in the school he / she will be allowed
to appear for the Boards (pen paper / online) EXTERNAL EXAMINATION.
• Further, for those students who wish to assess themselves, after having given
the final Summative Assessment in the school, an ON DEMAND PROFICIENCY
TEST is available online which is different from the EXTERNAL EXAMINATION
conducted by the board.
Operational Modalities 2
• The CCE card will apply throughout the CBSE
schools in the country for admission to class XI.
In addition, schools can have their own criteria.
• Students will only be promoted on the basis of
both Formative and Summative Assessments
both of which are mandatory.
• Percentile Rank will be given on demand by the
CBSE for the students who appear in the
external examination conducted by the Board
What is Percentile Ranking ?
Percentile – A percentile rank is the percentage of scores that fall below a given score. To
find the percentile rank of a score x, out of a set of n scores, where x is not included,
use.
LETS TAKE AN EXAMPLE…
NO. OF STUDENTS IN A CLASS= 40
SCORE OF STUDENT ‘A’= 80%
NO. OF STUDENTS BELOW HIM= 22
PERCENTILE RANKING OF STUDENT A
NO. OF STUDENTS BELOW (A)
TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS

X 100 = 55

basis of marks.
Eliminate unhealthy cut throat competition
among high achievers.
Reduce societal pressure and provide the
learner with more flexibility.
Lead to a better learning environment.
