Beaumont Summer Reading Assignment (2014-2015)
For: AP Literature
Assignment:
All students enrolled in AP Literature must read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. These students are also expected
to fulfill the summer reading requirements for Honors British Literature, which are explained on a separate handout.
Overview:
If you are enrolled in AP Literature, you are expected to complete the assigned readings for both AP Literature and
Honors British Literature and take meticulous notes on the books using the topics listed below. The notes should be
carefully and thoughtfully taken and neatly written or typed. These notes will prepare you for class discussions, AP-style
multiple-choice tests, and AP-style essay prompts that will be graded. Your notes should be ready on the first day of AP
Literature.
Do not use movies or study aides like Spark Notes or Enotes in place of reading Wuthering Heights. Also, in terms of
note-taking, plagiarism will not be tolerated. Be sure your work ethic reflects your status as an AP and Honors student.
Consider the following topics as you take notes:
1. Significance of the title
2. Heathcliff as a Byronic Hero and Catherine as a Femme Fatale
3. Bronte’s style and the novel’s structure (frame story)
4. Literary devices (points of view, symbols/motifs, settings, etc.)
5. Universal Themes
