STUDENT FRIENDLY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS – BUSINESS STUDIES Introduction to Information Technology Course Code: BTT 1O In this course students learn about information and communication technology in a business environment. It builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation and website design skills. In addition, students will learn computer hardware components, ergonomics and computer ethics, such as identity theft. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology. This knowledge will be useful in other high school courses, post secondary education and preparation for the workforce. This is a hands-on course where students will work on projects such as: Writing business letters Developing spreadsheets, such as tracking the sales for a pizza company Developing databases, such as managing a record sheet for a local charity Effective presentation format and execution Develop a web site fan page Pre-requisite: None Introduction to Business, Grade 10 – open BBI 2O Students will get to explore all components of business: production, marketing, managing people, accounting, finance/stock market and running your own business. Every component of business will last for a few weeks so students develop the basic understanding and are able to apply theories learned to practical situations they would encounter in business. In addition, students will learn how to develop their public speaking, teamwork and leadership skills through interactive class activities. This is a course where we apply theories learned through a combination of hands-on projects such as: Venture Week – Students will be running their own business in the school Stock Market Challenge Creating your own commercials/advertisements Dragon’s Den simulation Prerequisite: None Entrepreneurship: The Enterprising Person , Grade 11 - Open BDP 3O This course examines the importance of enterprising employees in today’s changing business environment. Students will learn about the skills and attributes of enterprising employees, the distinguishing features of their work environments, and the challenges and rewards of becoming an enterprising person. Students will also have an opportunity to demonstrate and develop enterprising skills by planning and organizing a school or community event. Prerequisite: None Marketing: Goods, Services and Events, Grade 11 – College Preparation BMI 3C This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of product marketing, which includes the marketing of goods, services and events. Students will examine how trends, issues, global economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, develop marketing strategies, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice. Prerequisite: None Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment, Grade 11 - Open BTA 3O This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies. Prerequisite: None Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11 – University/College Preparation BAF 3M Students will get to explore the foundations of accounting, with focus on the accounting cycle for service and retail businesses. Students will develop a basic understanding of how accounting is applied in the workplace through financial analysis, control and decision making in the management of a business. In short, real business concepts are explored in a student friendly way. In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned through a fun and hands-on business simulation that takes a close and practical look at how a typical business might run. Everything learned in this course has a direct real world application. Prerequisite: None Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12 – University/College Preparation BAT 4M This course expands on concepts introduced in BAF 3M. Students will learn real world accounting that will benefit them in both post-secondary and in their personal lives. This course expands students’ knowledge of sources of financing, further develops accounting methods for assets, and introduces accounting for partnerships and corporations. Students will also have opportunities to compete in business competitions for cash prices, which will also improve their post-secondary applications. Assessments are varied and include individual and group projects and hands-on simulations. Prerequisite: Grade 11 Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11 University/College Preparation International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12 – University/College Preparation BBB 4M This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, effective communication and global business trends. Students will get the opportunity to complete a hands-on project where they simulate running an international business. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management. Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in Business Studies, Canadian and world studies, or English. Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12 – University/College Preparation BOH 4M This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyze the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility are also emphasized. In addition to theory, this course offers hands on learning where students will have the opportunity to plan, organize, and manage an event within the class/school over the course of the semester. Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in Business Studies, Canadian and world studies, or English.
