Réexaminons le passé composé
A verb in the passé composé = helping verb (auxiliary verb) + past participle
Many verbs will use the conjugated form of AVOIR as the auxiliary verb.
Example: J’ai dansé
ai is the helping verb
dansé is the past particple
Meanings: I danced, I have danced and I did dance
REGULAR VERBS
-er verbs
1. Conjugate avoir to match the subject. This will be the helping verb. 3. Add a –é
to form the past participle.
Example:
Meaning:
We sang. ________________________________________________
We sang, we have sung, we did sing
-ir verbs
1. Conjugate avoir to match the subject. This will be the helping verb.
2. Drop the –ir ending.
3. Add a –i to form the past participle.
Example:
Meaning:
Marc finished. _____________________________________________
Marc finished, Marc has finished. Marc _________________________
-re verbs
1. Conjugate avoir to match the subject. This will be the helping verb.
2. Drop the –re ending.
3. Add a –u to form the past participle.
Example:
Meaning:
Tu mowed the lawn. _______________________________________
You ________________/_______________/________________ the lawn.
IRREGULAR VERBS
The following irregular verbs will use AVOIR for the helping verb.
