Course Syllabus Subject: Honors Economics Text: Contemporary Economics - William McEachern - Cost: $ 57.50 Teacher: Chris Stahler Course Description: This is an introduction to economics course which combines the concepts of micro and macro economics. There will be an emphasis on the free enterprise system of the United States and the global economy of the world. The course will introduce several economic terms and principles and better prepare the student to participate as productive citizens by making educated economic decisions. Course Objectives: 1. identify key economic terms and principles 2. describe how economics relates to the “real world” 3. exhibit an awareness of the American economic system from its origin to the present 4. demonstrate an understanding of saving and investing 5. discuss current domestic and international economic, political, and social issues Methods of Instruction: A variety of methods will be used including lectures, discussions, group work, student presentations, simulations, videos, etc… Grading: Points will be awarded for each graded assignment which will include class work, home work, quizzes, tests, and projects. Grades are determined by dividing the points earned by the points possible. The END OF COURSE TEST will be the FINAL EXAM and account for 15% of the final average. Tests: Many tests will include more than one chapter and we will attempt to keep the following schedule: Chapters 1,2,3 test 1/23 Chapters 4,5,6 test 2/12 Chapter 7 test 2/27 Chapters 8, test 3/6 Stock Market Introduction and Stocksquest, also personal finance material – savings, investments, budgets, insurance. Midterm exam, including chapters 1-8 week of 3/9 Chapter 9 test 3/19 Chapter 10 test 3/26 Chapter 11 test 4/2 Chapters 12,13 test 4/17 Chapters 18, 19 test 4/23 Chapters 14,15 test 4/30 Chapters 16,17 test 5/7 End of Course Test week of 5/11 Business Project: Each student will be required to present information on a publicly traded company. Details of this will be presented later in the semester. This will count at least one test grade. Due date: Approximately May 15th. Required Reading: The Millionaire Next Door : Details on the book report and/or book tests will be given later in the semester. Current Events Project: Each student will be required to complete a journal of three articles on the following topics: Consumerism, Fiscal & Monetary Policy, Labor and Immigration, Business Organization changes, Savings & Investing, Business Ethics. Details will be given at a later date. Be on time and be prepared for class! Please have a notebook/binder for this class. You will accumulate hundreds of economic terms, handouts, readings, etc… that will be beneficial to keep the entire semester. 2. Be respectful to your teacher, classmates, yourself, and anyone you may encounter in this class and school. Please DO NOT talk while the intercom is in use, this includes announcements. 3. Leave the room only in an emergency. 4. Follow all rules and guidelines in the school and county handbooks. Makeup Work: Please make up missed assignments, quizzes and tests as quickly as possible. We will move quickly in this class and waiting the maximum ten days usually results in lower grades. Arrangements for makeup tests must be made in advance. Failure to make up work within the allotted time (usually ten days) will result in a zero. This is a required course for graduation. The End Of Course Test will count 15% of the final grade therefore you need to have a high grade going into that test to be assured of passing economics.
