1444: Europeans trade on the west coast of
Africa was with people wearing elaborate
hairstyles, including locks, and plaits.
1619: First slaves brought to Jamestown; African
language, culture and grooming tradition begin to
disappear. There was little time for things like
beautiful African hairstyles. Most women covered
their hair in a rag. For those who worked outside
braids were popular. Sundays everyone was off.
This gave women time to do their hair for church.
America hair products such as palm oil were not
sold. They did not even have the right kind of
combs. So, women had to make do with butter and
bacon grease and the carding combs of sheep.

“I am a woman who came from the cotton
fields of the South. From there I was
promoted to the washtub. From there I was
promoted to the cook kitchen. And from
there I promoted myself into the business of
manufacturing hair goods and
preparations….I have built my own factory
on my own ground.”

Hairstyle #1 Dread locks
Sectioned hair into squares. Square sections make
round dreads. Between 1" and 2" squares As you
section the hair you can secure each section with a
rubberband. When the whole head is sectioned twist
each section clockwise using a comb to snag the
hair at the ends and twist. As each section is twisted
dread wax should be worked in to hold the twists.
Thick waxes without petroleum hold the hair much
better when starting the dreads. After the dreads
mature thinner waxes can be used to add fragrance
and sheen. Hair should be twisted by hand regularly
to help it lock up.

Born Sarah Breedlove on 12/23/ 1867 on a Delta, Louisiana plantation,
transformed herself from an uneducated farm laborer and laundress into one of
the twentieth century’s most successful, self-made women entrepreneurs.
During the 1890s, Sarah began to suffer from a scalp ailment that caused her to
lose most of her hair. She experimented with many homemade remedies and
store-bought products. In 1905 she married and changing her name to
“Madam” C. J. Walker, she founded her own business and began selling
Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower, a scalp conditioning and healing
formula, which she claimed had been revealed to her in a dream. Madam
Walker did NOT invent the straightening comb or chemical perms. She did
widened the teeth on the comb and revolutionize the black hair industry by
introducing the "shampoo-press-and-curl" By the time she died (1919) at her
estate in New York, she had helped create the role of the 20th Century, selfmade American businesswoman; and first black female millionaire. Tenacity
and perseverance, faith in herself and in God, quality products and “honest
business dealings” were the elements and strategies she prescribed for aspiring
entrepreneurs who requested the secret to her rags-to-riches ascent. “There is
no royal flower-strewn path to success,” she once commented. “And if there is,
I have not found it for if I have accomplished anything in life it is because I
have been willing to work hard.”

1865: Slavery ends, but whites look upon black women who style their hair like white women as well-adjusted.
“Good” hair becomes a prerequisite for entering certain schools, churches, social groups and business network
Internet research: Who invented the Pressing comb? Who was Annie Malone? Madam C. J. Walker did not
invent the pressing comb. She only changed the design of the comb so the teeth in the comb were wider and
would go through course hair. The pressing comb was first used by the French around the year 1845. Women in
Paris had been using hot combs to replicate the straight styles worn by ancient Egyptians.

1. Read and Follow the instructions Use a rat-tail comb to part your hair into four sections.
2. Apply the softening creme from the Jheri curl kit. Allow the creme to sit on your hair for the specified amount of time that is
indicated on the product label. Because most Jheri curl kits contain "Lye", it is very important that you don't leave the creme on
your hair past the recommended time. Doing so can result in severe hair loss or breakage.
3. Rinse the creme from your hair with lukewarm water. Wash and shampoo your hair with the neutralizing shampoo that
came with the creme.
4. Start rolling your hair with the perm rods. Only put a small amount of hair on each rod. Be sure to cover each hair rod with
rod paper.
5. Apply permanent wave solution Cover your rodded hair with a plastic shower cap. Sit with your hair covered for the amount
of time specified on the packaging. Generally, this will be 15 to 30 minutes.
6. Rinse the permanent wave solution out of your hair with lukewarm water. This is done while the rods are still in your hair.
7. Apply neutralizing solution over your rodded hair. Allow the solution to sit for 5 minutes. Rinse the neutralizer from your hair
with lukewarm water. Use a towel to blot the excess water from your rodded hair. Remove the perm rods from your hair.
Apply a quarter sized drop of Jheri curl activator into your hands. Place the activator onto your hair. Be sure to rub it in so that
it saturates the curls. Spray your curls with Jheri curl moisturizer to give it moisture.
*Use a wide tooth rake comb or pic to style your Jheri curl.
