Photo Here If Applicable Ontario Public Service Summer Employment Opportunities (SEO) Guide For Submitting An Application Prepared by: Youth and Outreach, Youth and New Professionals Secretariat (YNPS) HROntario Ministry of Government Services February, 2012 Guide Instructions • • • • • The purpose of this guide is to assist you in completing your application form for a Student-Summer Employment Opportunity (SEO) with the Ontario Public Service Screen shots have been provided to familiarize you with: a) The job ad b) The application form Please ensure you review the job ad information in detail prior to submitting your application New for 2012: There are a number of pre-screening questions on the application form that use a rating scale for responses. All questions must be answered to successfully submit your application. You are encouraged to review the new SEO rating scale prior to answering these questions. The SEO rating scale will be available in the Frequently Asked Questions – Section E, Question 2 on the SEO website and in Appendix A of this document. 1 Job Ad Slide 1/5 A. Job ad title – all SEO ads start with “Student” B. This section includes specific information for the overall job ad e.g. ministries, city (cities), region, how many positions, salary level etc. A . B C. This section provides an overview of Summer Employment Opportunities (SEO) and instructions about the ad D. Students are encouraged to review the SEO rating scale document listed in the Frequently Asked Questions (Section E, Question 2) and Appendix A of this document prior to answering any of the prescreening questions in the application form C D 2 Job Ad Slide 2/5 This section will give you a brief description of the duties and responsibilities associated with the position. Each job ad will include a list of skills and knowledge required for the job. You must have demonstrated these skills in your previous school, work and/or volunteer experiences. They must be described in your online application in sufficient detail to match the rating scale responses you select to answer the prescreening questions. 3 Job Ad Slide 3/5 Each job ad will have a list of prescreening questions that you are required to answer The purpose of these questions is to determine your eligibility for the Summer Employment Opportunities and gain some insight into your knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences You can preview these questions on the job ad (as shown on the right). After you select “Apply Online” you will be able to see the answer options and indicate your response There are 3 additional questions that will appear on every job ad that are only available after selecting “Apply Online” in the “Applicant Profile Questions” section 4 Job Ad Slide 4/5 A. This section highlights the date that the position was posted For Student Summer Employment Opportunities there will be only 2 posting dates; February 17 and March 9, 2012 A B B B. Some positions may require a criminal reference check. If applicable, this notice will appear within this section of the job ad. If you are selected for a position in 2012, please note that you may be considered for a rehire opportunity in the same position the following year (at the manager’s discretion). E. This section of the job ad lists the specific position details. Depending on the job ad it will include the number of available positions, duration and street address. To find the ministries associated with positions and addresses, select the “View More Information” link. D E 6 Application Form – Personal Information Slide 1/6 A. This section offers general information about the job ad i.e. the position title, ministry name (if multiple ministries it will state “Various Ministries”, the job ID number and the deadline to submit your application. Select the “View More Information” link on the job ad to see the ministries associated with positions on this ad. B. Please accurately enter all your personal information. If you are a previous or current Ontario government employee, please include your WIN ID. For all other applicants please disregard this field A B Make sure to include your contact address. This may be your current or anticipated summer address. Please note all candidates must be residents of Ontario and provide an Ontario address 7 Application Form – Applicant Profile Questions Slide 2/6 It is your responsibility to include the correct phone number and email address that you can be reached at during the recruitment process. You will receive a confirmation email at the email provided in this section after successfully submitting an application. Please select any current or past fields of study. You can choose up to a maximum of three (3) by holding the Ctrl button and clicking on your selections This question requires you to indicate the level of education that you would have completed by the end of April or June, 2012. You can choose only one response from the drop down selection Identify all the relevant computer software/languages that you have intermediate* experience with. You can choose as many options as applicable by holding the Ctrl button and click on your selections. *Intermediate is defined in the SEO rating scale document in Appendix A of this document 8 Application Form – Additional/Pre-Screening Questions Slide 3/6 The Additional Question (s) section lists all the eligibility and job type specific questions that are mandatory to answer prior to submitting an application. The purpose of these questions is to determine your eligibility for the Summer Employment Opportunities Program and to match your responses to find the best fit for your knowledge, skills and experiences. Majority of the questions in this section will be in the drop down format allowing you to select your answer from specific options. 9 Application Form – Additional/Pre-Screening Questions Slide 3/6 continued… You will need to include your key skills/abilities, work/volunteer work experiences and accomplishments in this section. Please note there is a 2000 character limit per open text box. 10 Application Form – Submit your Application Slide 4/6 A A. Your responses for the text box questions can be in a list or paragraph format If you have no information to enter in the text box questions, then please enter “nil” Please note there is a 2000 character limit per open text box. B C B. Please note that relocation costs are not covered by the SEO program. If you are selected for a position outside of the address provided on your application, then you will be responsible for any associated costs C. You can select your Ministry preference. If you check off the “Remember my Information” box here, the system will retain the information completed under the “Personal Information” section for any future applications submitted using the same computer. This button takes you back to the main search feature on the OPS eCareers website 13 Appendix A – Summer Employment Opportunities Rating Scale Slide 1/3 • Prior to applying to a student – summer employment job ad please familiarize yourself with the detailed rating scale. You will be required to answer a number of pre-screening questions per job ad using this four point scale.
