Socratic Seminars allow participants to achieve a deeper understanding of themes
or ideas as they question a text, make connections, and synthesize others’ points of
view into their own understanding. As the teacher observes, he or she plays no
role in propelling, correcting, or facilitating the conversation. This student group
model spreads the burden of conversation to all participants; thus, all are
responsible for the quality of the discussion. This is an exchange of ideas, a think
aloud, about an open-ended question where there is not always a right answer. The
students are prepared for each conversation with not only textual support and text
to other connections for their ideas, but also bring questions to the group to be
discussed. A rubric is used to evaluate the students’ individually during the
discussion.
