As the teacher observes, he or she plays no role in propelling, correcting, or facilitating the conversation. This student group model spreads the burden of conversation to all participants; thus, all are responsible for the quality of the discussion. This is an exchange of ideas, a think aloud, about an open-ended question where there is not always a right answer. The students are prepared for each conversation with not only textual support and text to other connections for their ideas, but also bring questions to the group to be discussed.
