SPEECH 2: INFORMATIVE SPEECH [ HIEP TON] September 24, 2015
NOTE
INTRODUCTION :
 [Attention Factor] Beside Mr.Scott Lee, may I know whether anyone of us has ever
experienced this disease –[PICTURE 0] Cancer?
 [Credibility] Professor Lam, who has led many engineering projects in DeAnza ETC as
well as many other researches and discoveries, passed away recently in September 25th,
2015 – means this current quarter.
 [Thesis] Through this presentation, I hope I can raise some awareness in everyone of us
about some basic information of cancer and the best possibilities to stay away from it.
TRANSITION : I will not cover anything relating to the History of Cancer. The word Cancer,
which was named by a Greek physician Hippocrates (460-370 BC). Once again, I
will not cover any history of Cancer. Physician Hippocrates name it based on
terms carcinos and carcinoma to describe non-ulcer forming and ulcer-forming
tumors. In Greek, cancer means a crab (with the b at the end). As I promised, no
history.
BODY :
I.
START WITH THE BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT CANCER:
 [PICTURE 1] – Explain Cell and DNA location in nucleus.
Guess how many 0s in a trillions? 12 zeros (write on board)
Guess how many of those cells we approximately have in our body? 37.2 trillions
[Draw Cells and DNA on board]
 [1st sources] According to the American Cancer Society, Damage cells in our
bodies receive instruction from our DNA whether to prepare the damage cells or
even destroy it for the new cells to grow.
 However, if the part of the DNA cells got damage, the DNA itself is not able to
prepare itself. And the worst part is that now the DNA cells allow those damage
cells to grow with a dramatic pace. Those growing damaged cells called Cancer
cells, common known as tumor.

II.
There are two general ways to put this disease in control or destroy it.

 [PICTURE 2] First is Radiation Therapy:
where those cancer cells are targeted and destroy by using X-ray through the
Medical Linear Accelerator – explain machine.
 [PICTURE 3] Second is ChemoTherapy:
As the cancer cells develop and grow its own blood supply line, those cancer cells
break away and join the blood vessel. Transfering along the vessel, it comes the
spreading of cancer cells.
Since the growth pace of cancer cells is rapidly dramatic. ChemoTherapy is the
method of using medicine that targets all the fast reproducing cells. Since
ChemoTherapy does not recognize the cancer cells and the normal cells, it kills
whatever cells grow fast.
 Even though ChemoTherapy will also kill normal fast growing cells, it is as a filter
that hopefully can eliminate all cancer cells, or again, known as tumor.
 ChemoTherapy firstly transfer to the body as normal drugs. However, tumors as
mention above break into the blood vessel and travel throughout the body under
a uncontrollable rate. [PICTURE 4] Not to threat anyone but the truth is that if the
first stage fail to defeat the tumor, the ChemoTherapy will now have to do a
direct injection including cerebal spinal fluid area.
TRANSITION : As Tuan has explain basic information about radiation. I now would like to talk
about the possible ways to stay away from cancer. NOT guarantee anything since
we are all surrounded by radiation, even ourselves are one of the generators.
Yet, living with a higher awareness level. [PICTURE 5]
III.
PREVENTION:
 First, staying away from or miminizing the interacting period with explosive
sources of radiation, once again, your cellphone and electronic devices. Do not

allow them to be near your bedside.
 Second, try to treat your wound properly.
Sometimes, we all get comments such as:
“Oh come on, be strong. It is just a little sctrach”
“It will be ok after several days, no doctor checkup needed”
“I get it many times, and it will be ok. Don’t worry, you will heal up soon”
One point to think about is that who is advicing you, how much science
knowledge the person knows. Always remember, your DNA is unique, that is why
we are all different. Therefore, the characteristics of their bodies and yours are
different too. But you are the one who are wounded.
Your wound might be healed up physically normally.Yet, what we can see is the
outside, not the cells. Moreover, back to Professor Lam’s situation I mentioned
earlier, he got wounded in his right leg when he was a student.
[Supporting Material] According to his older brother’s analysis as a biologist, he
believes even though the wound outside seemed to be totally healup back then,
those damage cells inside were there waiting for many many many years until it
finally start to go on the final strike.
 Finally, believe it or not, please beware of your doctors.
Here are three specific cases:
1. Professor Lam died upon 3 weeks postpone of curing process. Can you
imagine how fast the dramatic growing pace of those tumors in 3 weeks is?
While a young Physician kept telling him to take more Xray photos stating:
“Xray and CT scan do no harm.” Professor Lam got him sit down and
explained how damaging those scans do to human body especially under
cancer condition and how disqualify that physican’s degree is.
2. Second case is one of my neighborhood. She used to work as a nurse near
the Xray room in the hospital. Later in the years when she retired, she got
effect that led to cancer. She is now very happy and becomes a totally new
person after fortunately got her cancer case totally cured after almost a
year of Chemotherapy process. Still, she aggressively mentions this point.
Direct quote “I cannot understand. I was so depressed knowing I might

die because of cancer. Yet, many chemotherapy agents kept nagging me
to choose them for treatment as if I was a fish in the market. I am a nurse
myself and I was not trained to do my job unethically like that. I feel like I
am their bank card, the longer the curing process, the higher income they
will get.”
3. Last case is myself. You know what is this? [PICTURE 6] – Anti Radiation
Vest. Explain differences and thyroid. I was in a sugery of taking out my
wisdom teeth. In order to make a proper diagnosis, the physician took Xray
of my mouth. She put this jacket on me and then start the process.
However, she did not even look whether if the jacket was used in the way it
was meant to be. The weakest spot that easily access to the radiation from
Xray is our thyroid – very thin protection from the skin and flesh. Well, the
best thing I did was to adjust the jacket and cover my thyroid by cloth
during the Xray process. From the deep of the physician’s eyes, I could tell
2 things:
one is I don’t know how these machine work
two is I don’t even care how it work but my monthly payment for this job.
CONCLUSION :
 I hope my cover on the basic cancer information and way to minimize the cancer risks
help everyone to find a safe way to live their lives.
 Even though doctors now are not purely doctors but somewhat mixture of business and
policitian, I do believe that there are doctors who pay their lives on their patients’. I
changed my major from physician to engineering.
 Although I did not have any official education on bio field but just on my own
researching and professional clarification, I do believe each of us must know the basic
science to survive, no matter what your majors are.
