Reader’s Mountain
The halfway point for Reader’s
Mountain is Monday, November
2nd. Students should have
completed half of their
books/projects. The final
checkpoint will be in December
before Winter Break.
Math: In Math, we will be wrapping up adding and subtracting
decimals and moving into multiplying and dividing decimals.
Students will need to divide a fraction (numerator by denominator),
divide a decimal by a whole number, a decimal by a decimal,
and a whole number by a decimal. Students will also be working
on solving real-life word problems using bar models for all of the
decimal operations. Students should be utilizing their Math Journal
every evening to help with homework and for a review of skills
learned while also practicing multiplication and division basic facts.
Reading/Language Arts: This month we will wrap up the
novel, Phantom Tollbooth. We have been using this novel to study
figurative language and word relationships (synonyms, antonyms,
and homographs). We will be utilizing our small group and Flex
block time to work on making inferences.
Greek/Latin Root Words: ceed, cede, cess, (go) and vers, vert
(turn)
Remember the Reader’s Mountain Project is an ongoing project.
Students should be completing one project every 1.5 weeks.
Homework Folders
It’s about that time: fall
cleaning! Please check your
child’s blue homework folder!
Empty out any papers that are
no longer necessary.
Science:
In November, we will begin our unit on Physical Science. Our first
topics in physical science are the relationships between
electricity and magnetism. Students will investigate static
electricity, be able to build a complete circuit, investigate the
materials that are conductors and insulators, and compare bar
magnets to electromagnets.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we will wrap up the post-Civil War
Reconstruction era and the accompanying 13th, 14th and 15th
amendments. After Reconstruction, we will begin to look at
Westward Progress in the United States as we settle and grow in
the West. We will move into the early 20th century and learn
how the US growth is leading to economic, trade, and
geographic changes as the nation becomes more powerful in
the world.
