The morning class will meet from 7:40 a.m. -9:40 a.m. The afternoon class will meet from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Park only in the West parking lot (to the left of the building). Health Science II: Prepares individuals desiring to work as nursing assistants with the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for providing basic care in extended care facilities, hospitals and home health agencies under the direction of licensed nurses. Presents information on the health care system and employment opportunities at a variety of entry levels. Includes an overview of the health care delivery systems, health care teams and legal and ethical considerations. Individuals who successfully complete this course are eligible to apply to sit for the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) certification exam for nursing assistants. This course meets the minimum standards set forth by the ISDH for Certified Nursing Assistant training. 2. Medical Terminology: Addresses basic terminology required of the allied health professional and provides a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathology, special procedures, laboratory procedures, and pharmacology. Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, word roots, and combining forms are presented. Emphasis is on forming a foundation for a medical vocabulary including meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Medical abbreviations, signs, and symbols are included. COLLEGE CREDITS Ivy Tech requires students to have a minimum of one of the following in order to qualify for college credits: Reading Writing ACCUPLACER 76 80 COMPASS 80 70 PSAT 46 46 SAT 460 460 ACT 18 17 Students will receive three (3) high school credit hours per semester (5 potential HSII dual credits and 3 potential Med Term dual credits through Ivy Tech). If for any reason a student decides to withdrawal from the 1 class prior to the end of a semester, the student will receive three (3) high school credit-failing grades for the semester. If a student completes the first semester and decides to withdrawal the second semester, the parent/guardian will be financially responsible for the class fees the school had to endure. REQUIREMENTS 1. Able to provide own transportation to class and to any local field trips when a bus is not taken. 2. Student must have access to a computer/ word processor for some assignments. 3. Completed physical exam after May 1 and before August 5 (If in a sport, a copy of the IHSAA Physical Exam is fine; otherwise, please have the C.N.A Program Physical Evaluation Form completed by a physician). 4. Pass a criminal background check. Cost is $20. 5. Completed two-step Mantoux/TB Skin Test. Do not start the TB test sooner than 30 days before class. PLEASE NOTE: A first TB test is given and read within 48-72 hours followed by a second TB test within 1-3 weeks following the first and read within 48-72 hours. Check with your doctor’s office for completion. Must be complete by August 5. ESTIMATED EXPENSES See expense and supply lists ATTENDANCE The class schedule will follow the Clinton Central School Corporation’s School Calendar. Career and technical programs that meet on a alternate schedule when the host school is delayed or cancelled. The teacher will communicate the alternate schedule to the students via email or text. If the school delay or cancellation is due to weather that prevents safe travel to school on the regular schedule, attendance at the CTE program is optional, and students will not be penalized for missing. Students should communicate with the teacher regarding attendance on these days. The teacher may assign an alternate activity to cover skills or standards that were missed. Attendance is very important and crucial for the success in the class. Missing more than six hours of clinical and/or class time may compromise the student’s ability to take the state exam. The Indiana State Department of Health requires a minimum of 30 classroom hours and 75 clinical hours before the student may apply for the exam. Deadline for these hours will be announced further into the semester. Each student’s home school attendance policy will be followed. All absences and tardiness will be reported to the student’s home school both semesters on a daily basis. If a student is going to be absent or tardy, please call the school AND call or text Mrs. Roeder. Unexcused absences: The student’s grades for Medical Terminology and HS II will be deducted by 2% for each day the student has an unexcused absence (up to a total of 10%). APPAREL AND GROOMING Students will be providing direct patient care, therefore apparel and grooming appropriately is expected. School dress code policies must also be followed, at all times, in addition to these apparel and grooming classroom rules. 1. Students may wear street clothes according to the home school’s dress code policy to class during instruction time, along with a watch with a second-hand and a student nametag. 2. All clinical days, students must wear scrubs (design and color chosen by instructor), clean tennis shoes, and watch with a second-hand and a student nametag. 2 3. All hair touching the shoulder must be pulled up during clinical time. 4. Acrylic nails, long length nails, nail polish, or dangling jewelry is unacceptable during clinical time. (2 studs in each ear is accepted, all other facial piercings are unacceptable) 5. Tattoos must be covered at all times. 6. Perfume or strong body sprays can aggravate patients/residents diseases and specific conditions, therefore, should not be worn during clinical time. 7. Male students should not have any facial hair for infection control reasons and professionalism. 8. Students should not wear scrubs to their home school at any time to decrease illnesses/exposures between the schools and the health care facilities. GRADING Points are earned for homework, clinical, projects, journaling, participation, and tests/quizzes. ISDH requires that students must score an 80 percent or above on all CNA related tests and quizzes in order to take the exam. If a student does not pass the first time, the student will have two (2) other attempts to pass with an 80 percent. If three attempts have been made and an eighty percent was still not obtained, the student will then have after school/class assignments and tutoring until he or she demonstrates knowledge on the particular topic of study. GRADING SCALE: A 100-90% D 60-69% B F 80-89% 0-59% C 70-79% MAKE-UP WORK In case of an absence, IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to find out what he/she missed. The student must contact the instructor to get the necessary materials and to schedule time to make-up required classroom and/or clinical time. CNA TESTING At the completion of the minimum 30 classroom hours and 75 clinical hours, the student will be eligible to take the final written exam and skills exam offered by ISDH (Indiana State Department of Health). If both tests are passed, the student will be registered with the ISDH as a C.N.A. Tentative testing will take place the beginning of March, but is subject to change. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Maintain confidentiality - Do not share any personal information or stories about patients and residents. Situations may be discussed within the classroom for learning purposes only. Never take patient information out of the facility or leave it in the view of the public or other non-authorized individuals. Breaching of confidentiality will be an automatic dismissal from the class for its entirety. Be Respectful - Have respect for your classmates, instructor, patients, residents, others, and yourself. Putdowns and inappropriate language is unacceptable. Be Prepared - Bring all necessary materials with you to class (name tag, second-hand watch, books, skills binder, note paper and, pen/pencil, etc.). Be ready to learn and actively participate in all learning activities. Be Responsible - Take responsibility for your learning if something is unclear ask questions and complete your assignments on time. Be on time and ready to start class/clinical. Tardiness will not be tolerated. . 3 Use lab/class and facility equipment/materials appropriately. Do not sleep or appear to be sleeping at any time. No food or drink is permitted during clinical time. Cell Phones are not allowed during classroom and/or clinical time. Unless otherwise specified. First offense, student will receive a verbal warning. Second offense, phone will be held by the instructor until after the class. Third offense, phone will be taken to the student’s home school by instructor within 3 days of offense. The home school will decide when and how the student retrieves the phone. MISCELLANEOUS 1. If a student completes the first semester and decides to withdrawal the second semester, the parent/guardian will be financially responsible for the class fees the school had to endure. 2. Smoking is not permitted on ANY grounds. 3. Do not bring valuables to class. The instructor or the buildings are not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings. 4. Students are to stay the entire class time: including classroom and clinical hours. If any student is caught leaving early without prior permission, the student will be dismissed from class for its entirety, without disciplinary actions taking place, due to the crucial/legal responsibility of a CNA’s job description. *No Exceptions* DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS #1: Verbal Warning-a simple verbal warning will be given to the student and documentation, including the date and reason of the verbal warning, will go in the students facility file for the remainder of the school year. #2: Written Warning-a written document that records the student’s name, date, reason, a corrective plan of action, and parent notification will be signed by the teacher and the student. The written warning will also remain in the students file for the remainder of the school year. #3: Time Out of Class-students will be referred to the office utilizing the school discipline process with a recommendation that the student will have time out of class for not following classroom rules after 2 warnings. #4: Dismissal from Class-students will be referred to the office utilizing the school discipline process and with administrations final approval the student will be officially dismissed from class, indefinitely. The school administrator will be notified as needed at the discretion of the instructor. **Students will be dismissed from the class for its entirety without any disciplinary actions first occurring, if any misappropriation occurs with a resident/patient or if a student is found leaving early** 4 Health Science II and Medical Terminology Class I have received and read the guidelines for the Health Science II and Medical Terminology classes.
