How is STAAR™ different from TAKS?
Students will be given a time limit of four hours to take the STAAR™
test. The writing test for grades 4, 7 and English I will be given over a
two day period with students being required to write more than one
essay. The math and science portions will include more griddable items.
Overall the tests will be longer and more difficult, requiring students to
use critical thinking and analysis to apply knowledge in everyday
situations and to transfer that knowledge to different scenarios.
The 15% Requirement:
The Texas Education Agency has provided school districts the option to
defer implementation of the statutory provision that requires
performance on an end-of-course assessment to count as 15 percent of
a student’s final course grade. Hooks ISD will participate in this
deferment; therefor the 15% provision will not be applied during the
2011-2012 school year towards a student’s final course grade.
