STAAR™ / STAAR™ EOC/ TAKS What test will your child take? The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) replaced the TAKS or Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills for students in grades 3-8 beginning in the 2011-2012 school year and will continue to be the state assessment for all students in grades 3-8. STAAR™ EOC or the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness End of Course exams are expanding to include students entering 9th and 10th grade. There are a total of 12 End of Course Exams students will take in High School. Students in grades 11-12 will take TAKS Exit Exams (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) for the 2012-2013 school year. What subjects will your child take a STAAR™ Assessment? ELEMENTARY 3rd Grade - STAAR™ Reading and Math 4th Grade - STAAR™ Reading, Math and Writing JUNIOR HIGH 5th Grade - STAAR™ Reading, Math, and Science 6th Grade - STAAR™ Reading and Math 7th Grade - STAAR™ Reading, Math and Writing 8th Grade - STAAR™ Reading, Math*, Science and Social Studies 8th Grade students taking Algebra I will take the Algebra I STAAR EOC exam. There are several assessment options available for students served through special education programs. Grades 3-8 STAAR™ STAAR™ Modified Grade 9 & 10 – STAAR™ EOC STAAR™ Modified EOC Grade 11 – TAKS TAKS Accommodated TAKS - Modified A student’s ARD committee shall determine the appropriate type of assessment to be administered. For students in 9th and 10th Grade, the ARD committee will determine how the score on an EOC assessment shall be used for final course grades, credit decisions, and graduation requirements. There are several assessment options available for student served through the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. Grades K-12 – TELPAS – All students who are served through the ESL program take this assessment yearly. Grades 3-8 – STAAR™ STAAR™ L (Linguistically Accommodated) - Available to students who meet the participation criteria for this assessment. Grade 9 & 10 – STAAR™ EOC STAAR™ L EOC (Linguistically Accommodated) - Available to students who meet the participation criteria for this assessment. Grade 11 – TAKS TAKS LAT (Linguistically Accommodated) A student’s LPAC committee shall determine the appropriate type of assessment to be administered. How is STAAR™ different from TAKS? Students will be given a time limit of four hours to take the STAAR™ test. The writing test for grades 4, 7 and English I will be given over a two day period with students being required to write more than one essay. The math and science portions will include more griddable items. Overall the tests will be longer and more difficult, requiring students to use critical thinking and analysis to apply knowledge in everyday situations and to transfer that knowledge to different scenarios. In addition, one major change applies to students entering 9th Grade in the 2011-2012 school year. *When required by state law, a student’s score on the initial end-of-course (EOC) assessment shall count for 15 percent of the student’s final grade for the course. * Requirements may change pending current legislature and TEA Guidelines.
