IB Part 1: Works in Translation
Written Assignment
Using the Interactive Oral and Reflective writings done in class, you will choose
one text to explore further. Below are all prompts from the three works
PROMPTS
Flowers of Evil – an anthology by Charles Baudelaire
1. What role does imagery play in the poems in Charles Baudelaire’s
anthology Flowers of Evil?
2. Explore settings employed by Baudelaire in his poems. How do they
represent the time period he was writing in?
3. What role do characters in the poems play in revealing ideologies of the
time period or Baudelaire’s view of the world?
4. How does Baudelaire employ the style of the time period to explore ideas
within his anthology?
Madame Bovary – Gustave Flaubert
1. Discuss the relationship between the setting and characters in the
construction of the time period.
2. Discuss the use of irony to reveal elements of society in the novel? You
might also discuss the author’s writing style, and how style affects the
understanding of purpose in the novel.
3. Choose a central symbol or motif used in the novel and discuss how
Flaubert employs it (integrates it) to reveal his philosophical perspective.
4. Choose a character or group of characters and explore their importance in
the novel. Consider their role in revealing Flaubert’s comments on
society or literature.
A Doll’s House – Henrik Ibsen
1. Discuss symbolic and/or allegorical aspects of the play. This could include
the title of the play, as well as symbolic or metaphorical items. Explore how
these items reveal ideologies of the time period.
2.
Irony and Paradox are very important in this play. What is the purpose of
the irony or paradox in the play? Choose one ironic or paradoxical aspect
and explore its implications.
3.
How are characters utilized in the play? You could explore a character’s
importance, or explore how Ibsen showcases character development.
4.
How does the setting influence the reader in this play? Consider all aspects
of setting (time period, length of the play, actual setting, etc), and discuss
how this influences the characters and how the setting is important to the
play’s overall meaning.
The goal is to use your writing and ideas from the Prompt to compose
your own topic…
UPON COMPLETION OF THE WRITING FOR THE PROMPT…
1. Organise a conference with me to discuss your ideas and direction. Have
notes, a thesis, and general ideas ready to discuss.
2. A rough draft to be turned in on Tuesday 4th November (or sooner. You
may e-mail drafts prior to this date so you have more time to work on the
final)
3. You may schedule additional conferences as needed (sometimes a quick
2-3 minute chat can help guide you and fix and blocks you are having).
