Course orientation--go over syllabus and requirements of the course.
Make sure you have purchased your textbook by the end of the first week!
Thursday, Aug. 28th
 Last day to turn in syllabus quiz and signed syllabus page.
 Begin discussion of Prehistoric and Aegean civilizations.
Week 2
Tuesday, Sept. 2nd

Read pages 3-10, and 32-40 in Chapter 1, and all of Chapter 2 in textbook. Answer
study questions found in Blackboard under “Chapters 1 & 2 Materials,” and study
from them for a multiple choice quiz.
 Submit chapter study questions for a grade.
 Take multiple choice quiz on Chapters 1 and 2 reading.
 Begin watching film - “Aegean: Legacy of Atlantis”
Thursday, Sept. 4th
 Continue watching film “Aegean: Legacy of Atlantis” (if necessary).
 Print out Hesiod’s “Theogony” (found in Blackboard under “Chapters 1 & 2
Materials”) and complete the assignment per the instructions at the top of the
first page. Bring to class with you to use in group work, and to submit for a
grade.

Print out the “Greek Values” document found in Blackboard and bring to class.
Print out the “Greek Vase Painting” document found in Blackboard and bring to
class.
Continue reading the Odyssey and working on the homework questions.
Week 5
Tuesday, Sept. 23rd
 Turn in Odyssey homework assignment.
 Class discussion on the Odyssey
 Discussion of Archaic Greek architecture
Thursday, Sept. 25th
 Read “Origins of Greek Philosophy” essay (in Blackboard), and complete the
homework assignment that goes along with it (also in Blackboard). Bring to
class to submit for a grade.
 Discussion of Pre-Socratic Greek philosophy
 Review for Test #1 on Chapters 1 & 2 material. (Look for a study guide in your Atlas
email.)
Week 6
Tuesday, Sept. 30th
 Test #1 on Chapters 1 & 2 material
Thursday, Oct. 2nd
 Odyssey essay due. (Must be uploaded to Blackboard by 11:59 PM.) See
Blackboard for essay instructions.
 Print out note-taking guide for film “Athens: Birthplace of Democracy” (found in
Blackboard) and bring to class with you. Watch film in class and take notes on
guide. You will keep this guide as a resource for your next essay.
Week 7
Tuesday, Oct. 7th
 Read democracy documents (found in Blackboard under “Chapter 3
Materials”), and complete homework assignment that goes with readings.
 Discussion of Classical Greece and the Age of Pericles.
Thursday, Oct. 9th



Read Chapter 3 and answer study questions (found in Blackboard under “Chapter 3

 Continue discussion of the Classical Period.

Discuss the emergence of Greek drama, and characteristics of a tragedy.
Discuss the play Oedipus the King.
