-- Help keep the Blue Book in print!
The Missouri Press Foundation urges you and your newspaper to consider
purchasing copies of the 2013-2014 Missouri Official Manual (Blue Book) and
giving those copies to your local public libraries and schools.
Purchasing two, three, even four copies of the Blue Book will help the Foundation
meet its sales goal of 2,500 copies by the end of December. Recently, one
Missouri Press member newspaper bought 16 copies of the Blue Book to give to
its local libraries and schools.
The Blue Book represents a historic reference book on Missouri government.
Library patrons and school students will refer to this book for generations to come.
Also, why not print out the order form and distribute the form to local county
officials? And, post the form in your office's front window.
The Blue Book was out of print until earlier this year, never to be published again
as ink-on-paper, until the Missouri Press Foundation stepped in and brought it
back as a hardcover book.
With every purchase, you are helping to keep the Blue Book IN PRINT!
Thank you for buying a Blue Book (or a few Blue Books).
Sincerely, Missouri Press Foundation

-- Warren Buffett: What Newspapers Need to Do to Survive
(Inland Press) -- If there’s one thing Warren Buffett knows, it’s how to earn the
most money in the smartest way. Buffett, the “Oracle of Omaha,” understands the
newspaper industry isn’t dead. It would be wise for publishers to listen to what
he’s got to say.

-- Why the printed coupon isn't going away
(Bloomberg Business Week) -- In the weeks leading to Thanksgiving, General
Mills will flood newspapers with millions of paper coupons for cans of its Pillsbury
Crescents and Biscuits. “Print is still an effective and efficient way to reach
consumers,” says Joe Trimble, promotions marketing manager for General Mills.
He heads the coupon group at the Minneapolis-based maker of brands such as
Cheerios, Betty Crocker, and Yoplait, which issues tens of millions of coupons
most weeks. It remains a juggernaut in the world of printed discount chits.
The paper coupon is not only a curious survivor of the digital revolution; it’s
thriving in it.

-- Please Take APME Survey on Newsroom Budgets
Newsroom managers are spending a good portion of their time these days
working on their 2015 budgets. The Associated Press Media Editors would like to

of journalism. The questions are designed to gather the latest information about
decisions being made in newsrooms across the country.
APME requests surveys completed by Monday, Nov. 24. The link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J6BSXF2

Results will appear in APME publications.

-- Boston Globe Raises Eyebrows With Full-Page Wrap Ad
Print advertising can still get people talking. That’s the most positive summary for
the reaction to The Boston Globe’s full-page wrap ad for the University of
Massachusetts Nov. 14, which took over the entire front page of the newspaper
except for the familiar Gothic script nameplate itself, alerting readers that this was
indeed The Boston Globe.
The... message was clearly marked as an advertisement and could in no way be
mistaken for editorial content... Still, some readers expressed surprise and
concern about the newspaper’s decision to turn its entire front page over to an
advertiser, prompting newspaper execs to promise more consultation before they
run similar ads in future. Read more: http://tinyurl.com/o5kdjer

-- Lt. Gen. Honore jabs media: ‘People like you’ driving chaos in Ferguson
(newsbusters.org) -- On CNN, Retired Lt. General Russel Honoré rebuked the
media's coverage of the ongoing controversy surrounding the police shooting of
Michael Brown. Anderson Cooper raised how a legal analyst contended Missouri
Governor Jay Nixon's activation of the National Guard, in anticipation of a grand
jury decision on the case, was an "escalation of this military-style approach that
didn't work in the first place." Cooper then asked, "Do you agree with that? That it
could, in some ways, do more harm than good?"
Honoré, who is best known for leading the military's relief operations in the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, replied by indicating that large part of the problem
was the media's spin of the issue...

-- Gashouse Gang serial story in the works for late December release
The 2015 Reading Across Missouri Project, a serialized story on The Gashouse
Gang, is gaining momentum. The story is being written by “Lily’s Story” author
Carolyn Mueller, of St. Louis. Nick Hayes, the British illustrator who drew pictures
for our 2014 story and created amazing images for the children’s book version,
“Lily, A True Story of Courage and the Joplin Tornado,” has agreed to bring our
new story to life with his art. Watch MPA News magazine and mopress.com for
details on the story, which should be available in late December for use after Jan.
1, 2015.
Last month 43 Missouri newspapers downloaded features from MPA’s Famous
Missouri Journalists series. We promoted the use of the series to kick of National
Newspaper Week in early October, but these stories on Missouri’s journalism
pioneers can be used at any time. There are 10 features in the series, including
the four added this year on Walter Williams, Lucille Bluford, Mary Paxton Keeley
and Walter Cronkite. To access the features, visit mo-nie.com and use code:
