Tuesday, Sept. 10th: “A” Day Wednesday, Sept. 11th: “B” Day Agenda Homework questions/Collect (Pg. 285/Activity Series WS) In-class: complete chemical formulas and equations worksheet Pg. 329: #1-14 Pg. 330: #21-30 Section 8.3 Quiz: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Lab write-up/Discussion: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Homework: Complete lab write-up Lab Next time: NO FLIP-FLOPS! NO SSA = NO LAB! Homework Pg. 285/Activity Series WS Questions? Collect In-Class Assignment Take some time to finish the “Chemical Formulas and Equations” worksheet in class. Side 329: #1-14 Side 330: #21-30 The worksheet is due TODAY! Section 8.3 Quiz “Classifying Chemical Reactions” You may use your book and your guided notes to complete the quiz on your own. When you finish, turn it in, pick up the lab handout and start reading it through… Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Get together with your 3:00 lab partner… Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” First, make a new “Table of Contents” page for your lab folder. Table of Contents Title of Lab Classifying Chemical Reactions Lab # 1 Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Hints You don’t have to do the Pre-Lab questions. (you’re welcome!) You will NOT be doing the optional “Classifying Chemical Reactions Worksheet” mentioned in item #3 on the very last page…at least not right now… Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Discussion This lab consists of 7 separate reactions that you will conduct and analyze. Reactions will be set up at the lab tables and you will rotate through. (Just like when you did the flame-test lab in Chem 1) Read the lab carefully, especially the background information and safety precautions. Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Changes to Materials List: 1. Delete “ammonium carbonate”. 2. Change “bunsen burner or laboratory burner” to bunsen burner and striker. 3. Change “forceps or crucible tongs” to crucible tongs. 4. Change “heat-resistant pad” to wire gauze. 5. Change “pipets, Beral-type” to dropper. Everything else stays the same… Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Changes to Procedure 1. You WILL NOT be doing Reaction #3. Ammonium carbonate needs to be used in the hood but the hood will have Reaction #8 set up in it. 2. However, you still need to answer the postlab question associated with Reaction #3 on the back page of the lab handout. **Hint: products are ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water.** Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Write-Up The lab write-up is a little different this year: 1. Title 2. Purpose 3. Hypothesis 4. Materials 5. Procedure Reflection Statement Should be the last paragraph in your lab. Reflection Statement The reflection statement is a paragraph statement that you’ll write after the completion of the lab. In it, the following items should be addressed to receive full credit: 1. Was your hypothesis correct? 2. What were some possible sources of error in the lab? 3. How could these sources of error be reduced in future trials? 4. Did this lab help you understand the material we’ve been covering? Lab: “Classifying Chemical Reactions” Write-Up You have the remainder of the class period to work on your lab write-up. You may work with your lab partner if you’d like. Write-ups will be checked for completion prior to the lab. This is a great lab to reinforce the different types of chemical reactions we talked about. Looking Ahead Thursday/Friday is lab day, no flip-flops! NO SSA = NO LAB! Chapter 8 test/concept review due: Friday, Sept. 20th: “A” Day Monday, Sept. 23rd: “B” Day
