AIM # 8: HOW DO WE ADD VECTORS? Do Now: Draw vectors for the following scenario and solve: Julio went to his friend’s house by walking 15 m east in 2 minutes. Then went around the block and walking 8 m north in 1 minute. 1. What is the distance he covered from his house to this point? 2. How far away is he from his starting position? 3. What is Julio’s velocity? (m/s) EQ: What variables can you manipulate to affect the movement of objects? TALK VECTOR TO ME GAME • Your objective it to get Ms. Adam 2.0 from one side of the room to the other safely without hitting any objects in the way. Ms. Adam 2.0 will only move if you give your instructions as a vector quantity. • Examples: • Walk left 3 steps. • Walk forward 1 meter. VECTOR ADDITION RULES • Add vectors head to tail. • The resultant vector starts at starting point and ends at the ending point. • If the vectors are going the same direction add the magnitudes of the vectors. The direction is the same. VECTOR ADDITION RULES PART 2 • If the vectors are going in opposite directions, subtract the magnitudes of the vectors. The direction is the same as the larger vector. VECTOR ADDITION RULES PART 3 • If the vectors are perpendicular (head to tail), then use the Pythagorean Theory to find the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector. •a2 + b2 = c2 Similarly a resultant can be broken into its x and y components using SOHCAHTOA c b a VECTOR ADDITION RULES PART 3 • If the vectors are concurrent then one of the vectors should be redrawn head to tail to the other and use the Pythagorean theory to find the resultant. Vectors are always added head to tail! VECTORS ADDITION GAME • http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3536 EXIT SLIP • Write three things you know about vector addition • Write two things you are struggling with • Write one thing you found interesting • (Think-Pair- Share) LABORATORY VECTORS ADDITION 1. Use the website to produce four successful resultants. Write down the components and the resultant from the window on the right side of the page. 2. Complete the worksheets provided in class
