Math Sessions
HS Mathematics AP Courses – A Day with an AP Calculus Reader (6 hours)
This workshop will give participants a behind –the-scenes look at the AP Readings. During the annual readings, AP freeresponse questions are read by more than 11,000 college faculty and AP teachers from around the world. In these workshops,
participants will learn about the mechanics of the scoring process, the roles of the various contributors, and the steps to
ensure consistent grading. As part of this workshop, participants will engage in an AP Reading-style training, applying a rubric
based on a current free-response questions, and participate in a mock reading using the rubric.
HS Mathematics AP Courses – What our AP Diagnostic and Exam Data Says (3 hours)
Come discuss, analyze, and plan from the trends we see in our AP Diagnostic data and our AP Exam data. Join other calculus
and statistics teachers for careful analysis of our data and plan together how instruction will be impacted from the trends we
see in the data.
Secondary Instructional Coaches – The REFLECT and ACT of the CARA Cycle (6 hours)
Are you feeling as if your groups have no buy-in during your reflective conversations? Are you finding that your data is the
same every cycle? Are group actions shallow and nonproductive? Come join other ICs in the district to learn how you can
bring meaning to your reflective conversations. Learn how the actions of your groups can be the beginning of real coaching
that you want to do with individual teachers. This session is reserved for secondary instructional coaches who have completed
the Dana Center Instructional Coaching training.
HS Mathematics – Using Formative Assessment to Curb Retesting (3 hours)
There’s no better way to keep your numbers low in the retesting room than to take care of student misunderstandings in class
before they leave your room. Learn ways that you can assess where students are every day so that you can address their
needs and prevent them from having to retest after major assignments.
HS Mathematics – How do I use AWARE and AUTOSCORE to drive my instruction? (3 hours)
Learn how to use a variety of reports in AWARE and AUTOSCORE to help you analyze CBAs, find trends in your own data, and
identify strengths and weaknesses in your instruction. This session will be devoted to discussion topics related to data analysis
and ways to improve classroom instruction that will increase student achievement.
HS Mathematics Collaborative Planning (6 hours)
If you are dedicated to getting ahead in planning and staying ahead, join us for a day of best practices around collaborative
planning. This session is dedicated to teams of high school mathematics teachers who want to learn best ways to plan for
instruction that is based on the data and will keep you focused on student achievement. (Please attend with your content
campus team for best results!)
HS Mathematics – NEW TEKS Overview for Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II (3 hours)
Come learn about the future of our most basic mathematics courses – how the standards are changing, what that means for
our curriculum, and how we will fill the gaps as some standards move multiple grade levels. Join us for a careful reading of the
new TEKS and a discussion of where FISD math curriculum will need to go in the near future.
HS Mathematics - Bundling Math Content and Process SEs for STAAR (3 hours)
Many of the STAAR Math assessment items are dual coded. Process skill Student Expectations (SEs) can no longer be taught in
isolation. To prepare our students for STAAR, content SEs need to bundled with process skill SEs. In this 3 hour workshop you
will discover the need for bundling, see examples of bundled lessons, and learn how to bundle math content and process skills
in your lessons as well.

MS Mathematics - Dana Center - Middle School Math Problem Solving (12 hours)
Participants will explore problem solving as it appears in and connects to the state standards. Working with other participants,
teachers will examine and use a set of research-based strategies and tools to increase students' problem-solving skills. In
particular, participants will learn and practice questioning strategies that add complexity to problems and challenge students
to think critically about all aspects of a given problem.
MS Mathematics - Moving Forward with Pre-AP Math Problem Solving (3 hours)
Employers repeatedly say they look to hire people who are problem solvers. In a world of immediate gratification, how do we
teach perseverance and help develop students who routinely look for creative solutions? In this session, participants will
explore desired student behaviors related to problem solving and what can be done in the middle school Pre-AP math
classroom to promote the identified behaviors.
MS Mathematics - Middle School Math Stations (3 hours)
Learning stations have been proven effective at the middle school level for helping students master concepts in mathematics,
as well as providing opportunities for differentiation. This session will provide teachers with tools and strategies for designing
and implementing learning stations in mathematics at the middle school level.
MS Mathematics - Teaching Mathematics Conceptually (3 hours)
NCTM advocates that learning mathematics is maximized when teachers focus on mathematical thinking and reasoning. This
session will provide strategies and techniques for implementing conceptual based teaching in the middle school mathematics
classroom.
MS Mathematics - Wading into the New Math TEKS (3 hours)
With the many shifts and changes found within the newly adopted math TEKS, we need to be proactive as we move towards
the 2014-2015 implementation year. Teachers will receive and be given time to explore a Side by Side Comparison Document
(in-depth analysis of the current and newly-adopted TEKS for their grade level). In addition to looking at how this time of
transition will be framed in FISD, participants will examine possible consequences for students if the transition is not
implemented with integrity.

SpringBoard Initial Institute Days 1 & 2 (GT Update) (12 hours)
The Initial Institute is an extensive initiation to the SpringBoard Program. Areas of focus include: SpringBoard content, activities
and instructional tools, alignment to the College Board Standards for College Success as well as to the TEKS, and assessments
of student progress. This training prepares teachers to use SpringBoard materials in all aspects of classroom instruction with an
emphasis on 'backward design.'
SpringBoard Advanced Institute Days 1 & 2 (GT Update) (12hours)
The Advanced Institute provides a close examination of SpringBoard strategies and activities that help students meet rigorous
expectations in reading and writing. Participants examine how reading and writing expectations have shifted over time,
analyze the instructional shifts required by the TEKS, and apply Springboard reading and writing strategies (TP-CASTT, TWIST,
Lit Circles, and Effective Feedback) in both literary and nonfiction texts. Participants will analyze student exemplars using a
common protocol, and participate in modeling based on SpringBoard Writing Workshops and Prompts. Finally, participants will
explore how and why to teach grammar in context. Please plan to bring your Teacher's Edition and Online username and
password. Anyone who has taken the SpringBoard Initial 2-day Training and plans to teach MS ILA or HS English should enroll
in this 2-day course.
Writing Challenges: Strategies for Success! (6 hours)
We need student writers who view writing as a process, engage willingly in prewriting and revising activities, and employ a
range of writing strategies depending on the purpose of their writing. In this session, we will explore new ways to engage
students deeply in the writing process, including tips for writing conferences and revision activities. We will also learn highyield, research-based strategies that work with both struggling and stellar writers
Formative Assessment for Student Writing (6 hours)
The primary goal is to give teachers tools to make the process of providing writing feedback more student-centered, enabling
more time for writing practice for students and less paperwork for teachers.
