Minutes of the Istanbul School Librarians’ Meeting, Wednesday 13 April 2011 held at SEV Çamlıca Primary School 1. Everybody introduced themselves to the new members. 2. Ebrary presentation / Ebru Tekin (ProQuest)Ebru.Tekin@proquest.co.uk Young generation likes using digital sources Ebrary can be reached anywhere with internet connection 450 publishing partners – Content of the ebrary worth $ 3.000.000 Multi users can reach the same book at the same time Growing- 4000 new titles are added every year Hosting is free Turkey is the second largest market – around 100( two thirds of) universities are using the product It has Brittannica and Facts on File Page limit to print extended to 40 pages per day Each user can have a password and sign in To make a citation there is another program called Ref works, but it is not free, subscription is needed. But it does all styles of citation. Advance search options ( source type, date, publisher, etc.) and subject directory search are available to give the exact price of the product and make a consortium numbers of the students of attending schools are important, but now it is about $5000 for participating university libraries in Turkey. Cara K: If we get the product can we get other products like Culture grams free – Ebru T : It is possible Elizabeth F: Copyright date of the products? Ebru T: Will search and answer later Ruth B : Is there an editorial policy to weed aged titles? Ebru T: will search and answer later. Ayşe Y: Are there any fiction titles, images , music? Garrett D : Can we put a link on the Opac page? Kurulay A : How will users reach the database? After the presentation, group thanked Ebru hanım for the information she gave and she left the meeting. Discussion about the e-books and databases continued. Cara K : Interested in a concortium. But not happy with Ebsco , it is not being used a lot. And reaching the databases can be a problem, because Enka students can’t reach destiny from home. Ruth B : We like Ebsco, because it has ERIC database and professional development sources, we don’t know that if the teachers are using efficiently but at least we have it there. Pricing for the ebrary sounds good, but is it too academic? Questia works almost the same... Cara K : We have books for the high school level but sometimes they need higher level... Ruth B: Sirs gives lexile level and sorts it. Amanda B: She attented an online seminar and Ebsco is beginning to provide e-books as well. But it is not on-line yet. Cara K : Price can be very expensive then. Ayşe Y: ebrary is for universities,more academic? Cara K: There’s another product - Infobase? It is like Destiny Onesearch, you can merge the databases and your book search... 3. Update about ECIS Librarians’ Meeting May 2011 -Cara Keyman Around 250 people from all over the world are attending the conference. Registration has been closed, and there is even a waiting list. 7-8 sessions will be held concurrently. Program is set, web site will be updated.http://ecist.read2live.com/ECIS_Istanbul/Welcome.html Registration begins at 9:15, conference begins at 9:45. 2,5 day conference, half day is preconference. 120 people will attend the pre-conference. Follett sponsored a boat trip. It will be on Friday night (13 May) between 4:30 – 7:00. Conference dinner will be in Portaxe restaurant at Baltalimanı on Saturday. 23 vendor tables will be at the conference. Cara asked for help for registration desk on Thursday and Friday. News from the Turkish Librarians’ Association Ayse Yüksel / Atakan Aydın This year Istanbul branch opened the Library Week celebtrations to the public. They arranged a walk through tunel to Taksim. Many people attented. There was a tram andlibrary school students read books and played music. Tourists interested and attended the walk! During the week lectures were given, picture exhibition was held. Ankara branch went to Ephesus Celcius library and Minister ofCulture Ertuğrul Günay made the opening. Some librarians from Greece and Italy also attended the ceremony. “Library of my imagination” was the topic for the art and composition competition among high school students. At Özyeğin University a short movie competiton was held with the same topic. Michael Stephens( Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois) gave apresentation about school libraries and social media. 5. Collaboration over library curriculum / scope and sequence - Amanda Bond She attended a meeting about librarianship for IB librarians in Jordan. She got the idea for a pilot project in IICS where the instruction is enquiry-based. There are 510 students in IICS and Amanda will endeavour to write a curriculum for the IB school program that is tailored to each student. It’s going to involve a huge amount of work! But will hopefullly be very beneficial to all involved. She is trying to build a collection to support the curriculum. There will be standards from 3rd grade to the 12th grade.Good luck, Amanda 6. Suppliers for library materials Amanda B: I am happy to create a database with the suppliers’ names and details.It is good to buy things locally. Sebnem G : In Eminönü they are selling book easels in a gift store... Ruth B: We are refurbishing our library and we are using the Gaylord catalog as our guide to show some of the things that we want. But, we are trying to find local sources to buy/ have things made that aresimilar. We worked with Ahmet Kardeş(Gözde Mobilya) before , http://www.gozdemobilya.com/category.php?kat=31 and now we are waiting to hear from him about wooden chairs and tables for the library. He also works outside Turkey, so we are expecting that the quality of the materials will be good. Read any good books lately? Sharing time – bring along a book you’ve enjoyed reading recently (All ) Stephanie W :Grizzly bears by Patricia Kendell. Children love these. It has also RC / AR quizzes. The year of goodbyes by Debbie Levy. It is a very good book for students who are interested in Holocaust books. A summary from Follett : Debbie Levy reveals the story of her mother's life in 1938, the family's last year in Germany before they escaped Nazi persecution, based on the poems, inscriptions, and drawings collected in twelve-year-old Jutta's autograph book, and describes Jutta's life in New York City. Amanda B: How do you buy your magazines? Ruth B : We use Ebsco. Cara K : New rep is not responding to the e- mails quickly... Atakan A: Irep Hanım is on maternity leave. New rep’s name Nihat Uz nihatuz@ebsco.com he eventually answers. Cara : Mailboxteacher magazine is very good. Are you getting digital? Stephanie W : We get print copy. Atakan A : Graphic guides for nonfiction topics are very nice. Introducing capitali$m : [a graphic guide] by Dan Cryan. Other titles in this series are, philosopy, sociology and cultural studies. Garrett D : Altyazı ( Subtitle) magazine (They recently published 100th issue) general editor Fırat Yücel came to meet with ACI students during Library week. IB film classes read movie critiques in English and Turkish, students prepared questionsand asked. After this visit students began reading and interested more for the magazine. The Beats: A Graphic History by Paul Buhle. Elizabeth F.: The Pursuit of Success by Sena Ozturan. She is a student of Tarsus American Lisesi. She also wrote a play about libraries for library week and it was performed at Tarsus. Ayse Y : I wanted to buy it but Baker & Taylor couldn’t supply. E F: I guess it is self published. But it is sold in Amazon. Ruth B. : Acting out : six one-act plays! : six Newbery stars! By featuring the playwrights, Avi ... [et al.] ; edited by Justin Chanda. Summary from Follett : Contains six original one-act plays by Newbery Award-winning children's authors, including Sharon Creech, Susan Cooper, Avi, Patricia MacLachlan, Katherine Paterson, and Richard Peck. English Drama teacher liked the book, and they are planning to teach it in class next year. Mortal Instruments series : City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass by Cassandra Clare . If your students like reading Twilight series, they will probably like this one two. It is in the second place YALSA's Teens' Top Ten2010 Books list. Kurulay A. : Matched by Ally Condie it is similar to Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins but it is not as violent.Summary from Amazon : In Matched, the Society Officials have determined optimal outcomes for all aspects of daily life, thereby removing the "burden" of choice. It is obvious that this titles will become popular among the kids. Shout magazine : This British teen magazine is also very popular and higly used by students recently. It has news about celebrities, and other topics for teenagers. We buy through Ebsco, but it comes directly from UK. Cara K. : How are you dealing with seniors and 8th graders? Ayse Y: Administration helps about it, we give the lists to them and they don’t give their official papers, and deal personally one by one with the kids.. UAA Librarians : Send sms messages to the parents, administration keeps their diploma. And stops giving books on April. Amanda B : Prepares a list of the books not returned and write to the list how much they would cost, so administration is interested and supportive! Everybody agreed that administration should inform library if any students/ faculty are leaving school during the school year. It allows library to ask for borrowed books back. At the end of the meeting Ruth Briddock announced that she will be leaving next year and go back to UK. She was very happy to arrange the meetings and meet with all the librarians in the group, and she believes that this group will continue working for school librarianship and will play a role to be pioneers in this area inTurkey.Everbody thanked Ms Briddock arranging the meetings and wished her all the best for her new future. UAA Librarians Kurulay Ates and Atakan Aydın will be continuing to arrange next meetings with the new librarian Lesley Lee. Date and place of next meeting will be determined at the beginning of the new school year, 2011 - 2012.
