Word Work
camp and stand
You can already read words like
these. What are the words? What
is the vowel sound in these
words? What letter makes the
sound? Now you will learn
another vowel sound for “a.”
Word Work
This person is an artist. An
artist draws and paints
pictures. You can see the
work of many artists in
museums. What sound
do you hear at the
beginning of artist? Say it
with me: /ar/. This is the
same vowel sound you
hear in park. The letter
“a” followed by “r” has a
sound that is neither short
nor long, but r-controlled.
An r-controlled vowel can
be spelled with the two
letters “ar” to make /ar/.
Word Work
hard
The two letters “ar” stand for
/ar/. This is how I blend this
word: /h/-/ar/-/d/, hard. Now
you try: /h/-/ar/-/d/, hard. The
letters “ar” stand for the vowel
sound, /ar/.
Word Work
Let’s try the same thing with
these words. Remember to
say the sound of the word
and the word in your head
and then say the word
aloud.

assistance.
