Homework * Each night, you should be spending about an hour on studying above and beyond any assignments that you have not finished in class! Learn how to “study!” now in order to prepare for junior high school! 1. Read for 20-30 minutes each school night and record what you have read (title, minutes or pages) and have your parent or guardian initial Thursday night. Add up your points! 2. Finish any math homework from the day’s assignment – study for test/quiz on Friday! Log-on to Pearson at www.pearsonsuccessnet.com for the short videos on the daily assignments and take the quizzes – they are so helpful. Ten Marks is a math program that the students started using – they are required to log-on for 10 minutes each night and have at least 80% accuracy! If not Ten Marks, then another math program (IXL, Khan, etc.)! 3. Vocabulary Root Words – make flash cards and study for Friday’s exam! Show Mrs. Cohen your flash cards on Friday to get credit! Spend about 5-10 minutes each night to review. Those flash cards are looking great! 4. In your “Writer’s Notebook,” from your daily experiences, notice someone – a character – someone you have come in contact with or just simply watched from afar - what does he/she look like? What is his/her body language like – describing these can go a long way toward showing the reader (me) what a character is doing. Does he/she walk with a limp? Does he or she hunch his/her shoulders? Think about the physical features of this person and describe them: porcelain skin, strong features such as a thick dark wiry moustache, long wavy bouncing hair, hands that have long narrow fingers, etc. Describe these traits using figurative language, personification, etc. Example) The clerk at the restaurant held out our bags, using his Hercules strong muscular arms which bulged as if he were holding 1,000 pounds of gold! Write one extremely detailed scene for one person each night – you might need to write between 2-5 sentences. 5. Review math concepts from previous lessons – we will be taking pop quizzes throughout the school year so it is important to keep up with what you have learned previously! Should be spending 5-10 minutes each night! 6. Clean up your binders to stay organized! 7. Starting this week, we will be working on the “Noredink” app for punctuation and grammar lessons – review your weak areas! If you do not pass the grammar lesson during the week, you will take a “hard copy” test on Friday. 8. Pay attention to your surroundings so when you write your narratives, you are able to draw from experiences – vivid verbs, sensory details, adjectives, and figurative language!
