Latin III Mrs. Dawn Strauss Instructor’s Contact Information: Course Information: Office: Room 214 Classroom: 202 Phone: 773-535-1350 ex Email: dstrauss@cps.edu Office Hours: 4th and 8th periods by appointment 1 Credit Latin III 2012-2013 Course Goals and Objectives The elements of this course remain the same throughout the academic school year. The most primary and critical goals for this course are the mastery of the vocabulary, grammar, and reading skills. In each chapter, the students will study the grammar, vocabulary, history, derivatives, and culture associated with the Latin language. By the end of the year, each student will become familiar with hundreds of Latin words and their many English derivations, several historical figures of the Late Republic and Early Empire, and the multiple impacts which antiquity had upon the modern Western Civilization. Prerequisites Latin I and II Required Daily Materials Ecce Romani III, Longman Publishing Paper, pen, or pencil Workbook Composition book Grading Homework Daily Interaction/Participation Formative Assessments Summative Assessments 20% 25% 25% 30% Assignments/Activities 1. Homework 2. Daily Warm-ups/Bell ringers 3. Group Activities 4. Projects 5. Weekly Quizzes 6. Unit Assessments 7. Semester Exams Attendance If you are absent from class for any reason, it is your responsibility to find out homework assignments as well as upcoming tests dates. You have as many days to make up homework as you were absent. It is your responsibility to give the made-up work to me within the allotted amount of time; afterwards it will not be accepted. If you return to school on a test day and you have had prior knowledge of the test, you will be expected to take the test in class that day. Tardiness Tardiness to class is unacceptable. Chronic tardiness will result in disciplinary as well as academic consequences. Homework/Warm-ups Daily assignments will be given, which will be checked for completion at the beginning of class. In addition, random spot checks will be given, which will be graded for accuracy. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. See “Attendance” above for make-up policy. If you are absent, you are responsible for both the warm-up and homework assignment for the days you missed. Please note that students are responsible for homework during field trips or other “signed-out” days. Acceptable In Class Behaviors: Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner when in a classroom. Examples of appropriate behaviors are: attentiveness, sitting up straight, backpacks/bags on the floor (not on your back), not talking while others are talking, respecting other people’s opinions and belief systems, and staying on task. Examples of inappropriate behaviors are: personal grooming (brushing hair, applying lip gloss/lotions, braiding hair, painting nails, etc), talking while others are talking, slouching, inappropriate side/under your breath comments, use of profanity or inappropriate language, to name a few. Behavior when a Substitute is Present: A substitute is taking the place of your regular teacher so all classroom rules still apply. A substitute is a guest in our classroom and deserves the same respect that any other adult in the building would receive. If assignments are not completed when a sub is present, it will be reflected in your grade. Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviors: First infractions will result in a teacher-student conference. Second infractions will result in teacher-parent communication. Further infractions will result in disciplinary action involving the administration. NOTE: Level 3 and above infractions (as outlined in the CPS Student Code of Conduct) will result in the consequences outline by Chicago Public Schools (http://policy.cps.k12.il.us/documents/705.5.pdf). Assessments Weekly history, vocabulary, reading and forms quizzes will be given every Friday OR the last day of the week. Summative assessments will be given at the end of each unit and will resemble the format of a National Latin Exam.
