Latin II Mrs. Dawn Strauss Instructor’s Contact Information: Course Information: Office: Room 214 Latin II Phone: 773-535-1350 ex 2012-2013 Email: dstrauss@cps.edu Office Hours: periods by appointment 1 Credit Course Goals and Objectives The elements of this course remain the same throughout the academic school year. The most primary and critical goals for this course are the mastery of the vocabulary, grammar, and reading skills. An important corollary goal is the ability to recognize English words derived from the Latin and to be able to deduce meaning based on knowledge of Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. In each chapter, the students will study the grammar, vocabulary, history, mythology, derivatives, and culture associated with the Latin language. By the end of the year, each student will become familiar with hundreds of Latin words and their many English derivations, several Roman/Greek deities, and the multiple impacts which antiquity had upon the modern Western Civilization. You have as many days to make up homework as you were absent. It is your responsibility to give the made-up work to me within the allotted amount of time; afterwards it will not be accepted. If you return to school on a test day and you have had prior knowledge of the test, you will be expected to take the test in class that day. Tardiness Tardiness to class is unacceptable. Chronic tardiness will result in disciplinary as well as academic consequences. Homework/Warm-ups Daily assignments will be given, which will be checked for completion at the beginning of class. In addition, random spot checks will be given, which will be graded for accuracy. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. See “Attendance” above for make-up policy. If you are absent, you are responsible for both the warm-up and homework assignment for the days you missed. Please note that students are responsible for homework during field trips or other “signed-out” days. Assignments/Activities 1. Homework 2. Daily Warm-ups/Bell ringers 3. Group Activities 4. Semester Exams Learning Targets/ Literacy Strategies CRS READING Main Idea and Author’s Approach Supporting Details Sequential, Comparative, and Cause-Effect Relationships Meaning of Words Generalizations and Conclusions Recognize a clear intent of an author or narrator in a Latin passage Make simple inferences about how details are used in Latin passages Determine when (e.g. first, last, before, after) or if an event occurred in uncomplicated passages Understand the implication of a familiar word or phrase and of simple descriptive language Draw simple generalizations and conclusions about the main characters in uncomplicated Latin narratives Locate basic facts clearly stated in a Latin passage Understand the implication of a familiar word or phrase and of simple descriptive language Recognize clear cause-effect relationships described within a single sentence in a passage Behavior when a Substitute is Present: A substitute is taking the place of your regular teacher so all classroom rules still apply. A substitute is a guest in our classroom and deserves the same respect that any other adult in the building would receive. If assignments are not completed when a sub is present, it will be reflected in your grade. Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviors: First infractions will result in a teacher-student conference. Second infractions will result in teacher-parent communication. Further infractions will result in disciplinary action involving the administration. NOTE: Level 3 and above infractions (as outlined in the CPS Student Code of Conduct) will result in the consequences outline by Chicago Public Schools (http://policy.cps.k12.il.us/documents/705.5.pdf).
