Book Summaries
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
If you are a history buff and interested in WWII, then Code Name Verity
is for you! The novel tracks a friendship between two British women. The
story is told through one of the women, who is captured, detained, and
interrogated by Nazi soldiers. Sound interesting? If not, consider that the
2012 fiction is described as a "mind game of a novel," so it promises to be a
captivating read!
A Long Way Gone
Have you ever heard the term "child soldier"? It seems like a
contradiction to many people. The idea of a child fighting in a war
is unfathomable. Yet, numerous children are forced into service for
rogue, militant groups. You can search the internet for information
about these children, but none of the information will compare to
the first-hand account by Ishmael Beah in A Long Way Gone. The
memoir is raw and dark but maintains a hopeful, redeeming spirit.
Beah's story is one that will make you think about the value placed
on the life of a child. It is an account that you will not soon forget.
It is also an incredible read.

Caesar:
What do you say to me now?
Soothsayser:
Beware the ides of March.
Caesar:
He is a dreamer; let us leave him.
Pass.
[Trumpets sound. Exit all but
Brutus and Cassius.]
Annotation
In this excerpt, a soothsayer - or
a person who can see the future warns Caesar that danger will
come to him on the ides of
March. One meaning for the ides
of March is the calendar date of
March 15. Since soothsayers can
predict the future, I assume that
something will happen to Caesar;
may be he will be killed on
March 15. Caesar, however, does
not seem concerned. He calls the
soothsayer “a dreamer” and
orders his men to continue
walking pass the man. As ruler,
Caesar has a dominating voice.
Full of himself as a dictator, he
literally dismisses the words of
the soothsayser. Of course, at the
time depicted in the play, it is
typical to make a distinction
between a ruler and his subjects.
Notice that the annotation goes beyond summary. It explain the importance of the
each part of the excerpt, provides additional factual information, offers an opinion,
and shows a connection to the theme of voice and culture. Since Caesar is a leader,
his voice is the only one that matters in their culture.
