2016 Lesson Six: Chapter 23 Central Africa
Dates: Block Days of Tuesday, January 12 or Wednesday, January 13, Thursday, January 14, Tuesday,
January 19, 2016, and Wednesday, January 20, 2016
(Friday, January 15 is an In-service day. Monday, January 18 is MLK Day.)
Day One: Block Day
1. Class: To introduce us to Decolonization and Rise of Nationalism/Pan-Africanism in Africa, we
are going to watch a short excerpt from a PBS Documentary on YouTube. As we watch, you
should take notes in the space below.




Notes on Decolonization Documentary:
2. Individual: You will now read and annotate the photocopied supplemental reading entitled
“How Did Colonialism Affect Kenya?”


You are to highlight the article. Remember to not highlight more than 20 to 30% of the
article. That is every two to three sentences per paragraph.
You are to Talk to the Text. This means you make comments that summarize, make
connections to what we have learned in class, to films, books, current events, pose
questions, express your thoughts, opinions, personal reactions.
3. Pairs: For the last 1/3 of the Block Period, you and your partner will examine the two primary
documents and complete the two Document Analysis Worksheets.


Document One: Source-Sir Charles Elliot, The East African Protectorate
Document Two: Source-Map on Africa 1900 Ethnic Groups
4. Homework: You have two homework assignments.
a) You will be assigned one of the four topics on Decolonization in Kenya. You are to examine
the primary documents under your assigned topic and complete the Document Analysis
Sheets. This will be checked for points in the next class period.
b) Your Current Event on Mali or Nigeria due on:__________________________.

Day Two: Thursday, January 14, 2016
5. Groups: For ten minutes, all the students assigned either A, B, C, or D documents will meet in
groups and share and compare their Document Analysis Sheets making sure they are accurate
and complete.
6. New Groups: Then new groups will be formed with a student from A, B, C, and D. Each
student will present their assigned documents, while the other students make notes on the
actual documents and ask questions of clarification.
7. Homework: You have two homework assignments.
a) Finish up the Current Event Assignment on Mali or Nigeria. It is due on Tuesday, January 19.
b) Work on the First Unit Study Guide and the Second Africa Unit Study Guide covering Chapters
21, 22, and 23.
Day Three: Tuesday, January 19, 2016
8. Pass up the Current Events Assignment.
9. Class: We are going to go over how to write a thesis statement. What are possible thesis
statements for Decolonization in Kenya? Write down ideas in space below:
10. Groups: Now working in your groups, you will complete the How Did Colonial Affect Kenya?
Outline. You will be using the earlier YouTube notes, the background reading, and the
primary documents. You have the rest of the class period to work on this.
11. Homework: Whatever parts of the Outline that are not completed in class, you are to finish
up individually tonight. This will be collected tomorrow at the start of class.
Day Four: Wednesday, January 20, 2016
12. Pass up the How Did Colonialism Affect Kenya? Outline. Make sure the grade sheet is
attached to the front and your name and class period on written on it.
13. Class: We are now going to do the PowerPoint Lecture on Chapter 23 Central Africa. You
have been given copies of the PowerPoint. As we go through the PowerPoint, you should be
doing the following:



Highlighting key information on the slides.
On the lines next to the slides, adding additional information from other slides that were
not copied and from the video clips.
On the lines next to the slides, writing down questions, writing down thoughts.
14. Homework:
a) Work on the First Unit Study Guide and the Second Africa Unit Study Guide covering Chapters
21, 22, and 23.
b) Begin going over your old unit tests for the Middle East and Africa Unit and correct your
answers.
c) Bring your binders, study guides, and old unit tests to class for Thursday, January 21 and
Friday, January 22, because you will have time to work with partners on them.
Thursday, January 21 and Friday, January 22, 2016:
You will have the class periods to work on the study guides and correcting your old unit tests. You
will be allowed to work with an assigned partner or individually on this.
