The medical information in the article “Insulin May Help Treat Alzheimer’s” is vital to the advancement of finding a cure
for this debilitating disease. I believe that now this article has been published, scientists will use insulin in experiments
to find a cure for other common cognitive disorders. This is a logical, future action that the researchers will take
because Landau noted that, “recent research has suggested that insulin plays an important role in a number of brain
functions” (Landau). The brain is a complex organ, so it is possible that insulin can be used as a cure for multiple brain
disorders. For example, a follow up research experiment might involve experimenting with insulin to find a cure for
stroke patients, brain cancer, and different types of muscular dystrophy.

Three Types of Research Quotes
1. Direct Quote- A research quote taken word for word from a source.
 To indicate that the quote is being used directly from the text, you put quotation marks around the quote
 For direct quotes that are three sentence or longer, instead of using quotation marks, you would indent
both sides of the quote an extra space on each side
Example:


Original wording: Recent research has suggested that insulin plays an important role in a number of brain
functions.
Direct Quote wording: “Recent research has suggested that insulin plays an important role in a number of
brain functions” (Landau).
As you see, the quote is worded exactly the same as the original text
2. Paraphrased Quote- A research quote re-written in your own words/ phrasing
 You do not need to use quotation marks or indent an extra space because this quote is written in your own
words
 However, you would still need to include a parenthetical citation
 The difference between paraphrasing and summarizing is that you should paraphrase a small amount of
information, up to a paragraph in length. The paraphrased quote should be about the same length as the
original text.
Example:


Original wording: Recent research has suggested that insulin plays an important role in a number of brain
functions.
Paraphrased wording: Insulin affects multiple functions and activity within the brain structure (Landau).
As you can see, the paraphrased quote discusses the same content, but uses different wording and phrases within the
sentence. The paraphrased sentence is about the same length as the original sentence.
3. Summarized Quote- When you condense a large amount of information into a shorter, succinct research
quote that discusses the most pertinent (important) information from the source
 Refer to the “How to Summarize a Text” power point for further clarification regarding this skill
 In essence, when you summarize, you are condensing a large amount of information into a shorter amount
of information
 Similar to the skill of paraphrasing, you are also summarizing the original text in your own words.

The Devil’s Arithmetic
Type of Source: Novel
The book “The Devil’s Arithmetic” discusses the topic of the Holocaust, a disastrous event that affects the world
even today. In the novel, the main character, Chaya, is sent to a concentration camp, where she experiences the horrors
that many innocent European Jews experienced during World War II. For example, her head is shaved, and she gets a
number tattooed on her arm. She loses a number of her friends, and is forced to watch her uncle, Shmuel, be executed
along with a half dozen other men. Finally, she is ultimately executed after bravely sacrificing herself in order to save
her friend (Yolen). Today, millions of people throughout the world still remember the numerous lives lost during that
event in history.





The information is a condensed account of the experiences that Chaya suffered through in the novel. These
examples span through multiple chapters of the book
Since I am summarizing a large amount of text, I had no choice but to summarize in my own words
In my summary, I included only the most important events of Chaya’s experience in the concentration
camps
