• The part of the journey when African Americans traveled on the boats
across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas
• 10-15% died on this journey
• Another 15-30% died before they got to the ship

• Up to 25% died on the ships by the 17 th century
• They were crammed together on the ships
• Slaves were packed two different ways
-Tight packing: crammed as many slaves on board
-Loose packing: fewer slaves in hope that more would survive
