Dr. David Cooper, Dean of the School of Education welcomed the group. Laura Williams, Elon’s CMC
Director, also welcomed the group and went over logistics. Members of the group then introduced
themselves.
The minutes of the Dec. 2008 were approved as presented.
Cass Plater, NC A&T State University’s CMC director, made a presentation on Lib Guides. Lib Guides is
an information sharing system that can be used to replace the countless paper subject guides we create
for our classes. The product can keep track of links, is easy to use, and most importantly, requires no
html knowledge. The product also keeps track of usage statistics and the widgits are easy to customize.
Lib Share is the vendor for Lib Guides and the pricing tier is based on the size of the school. NC A & T
State University has been using the product since March 2009. Another example of Lib Guides
implementation can be found at the University of Oregon.
Karen Gavigan suggested that we send out one letter from the organization to the textbook publishers,
requesting the state adopted textbooks for all of the colleges and universities that wish to participate.
Participation is voluntary and those wishing to be included in the group request should contact Karen
Gavigan. Perhaps in the future, the responsibility for requesting the materials would rotate among the
library participants. Karen will send out additional information on the listserv regarding this process.
Not all of the colleges and universities with Approved Teacher’s Ed. Programs are represented in our
group. Alan Bailey stated that he would contact the other libraries on the list to inform them about our
group.
Old business:
Alan Bailey indicated that he had received several inquiries regarding creating a web site for the
association. Anne Akers stated that she has started a site already on Google Site. She had already
uploaded the minutes from the December 2008 meeting on the site. Other suggestions for using the
website included, creating a blog about what we are reading, listing the member libraries with links to
their CMC websites, as well as a link to the revised Curriculum Materials Center guidelines. Carrie
Nichols stated that she would like to work with Anne Akers on further developing the site.
Laura Williams gave the group a tour of the Curriculum Resources Center, a newly renovated space. The
CMC center uses Follett Destiny as their catalog which allows searching by objective.
New Business:
The group has never had an official name and since many of the participants may not be CMC directors,
a name was chosen to represent the diversity of participants. A new name was chosen and approved.
The new name will be: North Carolina Curriculum Materials Center Association.
New officers were elected and the officers are:
Anne Akers will be the new President. She is currently Vice President and will assume the role of the
President.
Cass Plater was elected as Vice President.
Carrie Nichols was elected as Secretary.
The group discussed some options for the Fall meeting. It was suggested that we possibly meet for the
Fall meeting at UNC Charlotte during the week of AASL so that the participants may attend both
meetings. The group also discussed having the Spring/Summer meeting at either Appalachian State
University or at a college or university near the beach?
