Unit 2: The Middle East
Students will examine the religion, culture, government, economics, and
geography of the Middle East. They will go on to study the history of
Muhammad as well as two major groups within the Islamic religion and
the impact these two groups have had on the culture of the area.

they compare and contrast issues from both sides. The student will
discuss and debate the conflict and will be able to come to an individual
conclusion of support for either side.

The heart of the conflict is in Israel in the area around the
West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem
The Jewish people originally inhabited the land when Moses
led his people out of Egypt
They left when the Romans conquered the area in 135 C.E.
Muslims defeated the Romans and resided in the area for over
a thousand years

Jewish people want a unified Jerusalem as its capital as they
feel that is their homeland

The students will examine terrorist influences in the Islamic religion
by reading an article and critically comparing and contrasting the
youth in the article with someone the same age from Meridian, Idaho.
Journal 8 – What is Al Qaeda? The Taliban? ISIS?
• Newsweek Article: The Lure of Al Qaeda. This is an article from
September 2010 when Bin Laden was still alive. It is still
interesting and relevant as it discusses teenage suicide bombers.
• You will read this article and answer four questions in essay
format. It will basically be a short four paragraph essay.
