9th Grade Honors
Task List
At the beginning of each week, you will receive a list of tasks, or objectives, which must be completed by
Friday. When you receive this list, put it into your 3-ring binder ("portfolio"). When you complete a
task, place it behind the appropriate task list. You must keep your "portfolio” in order. I will take up
portfolios on Fridays to check for completion.
EQ: Why is it important to understand symbolism and irony when reading literature? What can be
expected to learn about while reading To Kill a Mockingbird?
1. The Most Dangerous Game
-Read the short story by Richard Connell. Each group member must participate in reading the
story.
2. Most Dangerous Game-Notes
-On a separate sheet of paper, identify and discuss the following based on the story. At the top,
label the page: "Most Dangerous Game- notes." You may work on this assignment as a team,
but each member should have a complete list in there notebook. Be sure to discuss each item.
Use quotes from the text to support your answers.
1. Plot: Write a paragraph summarizing the plot of the story.
2. Draw a Venn diagram. At the top of the left circle, label “General Zaroff.” At the top of the
right circle, label “Mr. Rainsford.” In the center circle, label “similarities.” In the left and right
circles, identify character traits and story details about the two characters. In the center circle,
identify similarities the character shares.
3. Theme: Based on the story as a whole, characters, conflict, and plot; what do you think is the
theme of the story? Keep in mind, theme is the meaning of a story; central or dominating idea.
It is not the moral or subject of the story.
4. Conflict: Describe the internal and external conflicts of the story.

-Complete Unit 1 (Pg. 21-27) on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to pay attention to
pronunciation, parts of speech, synonyms, and antonyms.
-Vocabulary quiz: Friday
4. Short Story Sketch:
One a sheet of copy paper, choose 2 examples of irony and 1 example of symbolism from the
three stories read thus far. Draw and color a picture for each example. Be sure to write the title
of the story where each example came from. Also, write a paragraph discussing each example.
5. To Kill A Mockingbird:
Read chapters 1-3 in To Kill a Mockingbird. Each group member must participate in reading the
story.
6. To Kill a Mockingbird-Reader Journal
-On a separate sheet of paper, you will keep a reading journal as you read through To Kill a
Mockingbird. After you have read each chapter, you will write a journal entry. Each entry will
have the chapter number and date and will be at least ½ a page in length. Be detailed. In these
