Key terms • American Enlightenment The American Enlightenment is the period of intellectual productivity in America in the mid-to-late 18th century. Works of the era prioritized liberty, democracy, and religious toleration, ideas expressed in the Declaration of Independence. • Bacon's Rebellion Bacon's Rebellion was an uprising in 1676 in the Virginia Colony in North America, led by a 29-year-old planter, Nathaniel Bacon. • colony A territory under the immediate political control of a state. Some colonies were historically countries, while others were territories without definite statehood from their inception. The metropolitan state is the state that owns the colony. A colony has no independent international representation, and its top-level administration is under direct control of the metropolitan state. • Columbian Exchange The Columbian Exchange, also known as the Grand Exchange, was the widespread exchange of animals, plants, culture, human populations (including slaves), communicable diseases, and ideas between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres following the voyage to the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492. • freedom dues At the end of the indenture, the person was given a new suit of clothes and a payment known as "freedom dues" and became a free member of society. • French and Indian War The North American theater (1754–1763) of the Seven Years' War, fought primarily between the colonies of British America and New France, with both sides supported by military units from their parent countries of Great Britain and France. • Indian Vaccination Act In 1832, the United States government established a smallpox vaccination program for Native Americans (The Indian Vaccination Act of 1832). Based on both ancient Greek and Renaissance European thought, republicanism has been a central part of American political culture and was a major influence on the Founding Fathers. • Roger Williams Roger Williams (c. 1603 – between January and March 1683) was an English Protestant theologian who was an early proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. In 1636, he began the colony of Providence Plantation, which provided a refuge for religious minorities. Williams started the first Baptist church in America, the First Baptist Church of Providence. He was a student of Native American languages and an advocate for fair dealings with Native Americans. Williams was arguably the very first European abolitionist in North America, having organized the first attempt to ban slavery in any of the original thirteen colonies. • terms of indenture Indentured servitude refers to the historical practice of contracting to work for a fixed period of time, typically three to seven years, in exchange for transportation, food, clothing, lodging and other necessities during the term of indenture.
