Parent Outreach and
Engagement Department
The purpose of parent engagement is to improve student achievement
• The Parent Outreach and Engagement Department provides parents,
caretakers, staff and community the research base to develop and implement
effective programs and activities that promote family engagement as a strategy
to achieve student success.
• Our work is aligned to support the District’s vision and initiatives, including:
– Community-Based School Reform Model
– African American Association of Educators Blueprint Recommendations
– Career Ready and College Preparatory (CRCP) Task Force Recommendations
• We also assist the district to meet all federal and state requirements for parental
involvement (Title 1, Title 3, and Title VII Indian Education).

Translation Department:
Legal Requirements
Annual Notification of Translation Languages per Assembly Bill 680
• If 15 percent or more of the pupils enrolled in a public school that provides
instruction in kindergarten or any of the grades 1 to 12, inclusive, speak a single
primary languages other than English, as determined from the census data
submitted to the department pursuant to Section 52164 in the preceding year, all
notices, reports, statements, or records sent to the parent or guardian of any
such pupil by the school or school district shall, in addition to being written in
English, be written in the primary language, and may be responded to either in
English or the primary language.
•
In addition, EC Section 48985 © required the California Department of Education
(CDE) to notify districts, by August of each year, of schools within the district
were languages other than English are spoken by 15 percent or more of the
student body and for which translations of parental notifications are required.

Government Relations
• Educate and engage policy makers on fiscal
matters in order to protect education funding, and
at least prevent disproportionate cuts to SDUSD.
• Take district policy priorities from idea to state law
or regulation.
• Coordinate strategy and build coalitions with large
urban districts and statewide education groups in
order to maximize impact.

Examples of Recent Deliverables
• Funding Advocacy:
– Secured over $22 million for San Diego Unified schools.
• Administrative Advocacy:
– Secured state board flexibility waiver to maintain school
grant of about $700,00 per year.
• Policy Advocacy:
– Organized successful introduction and passage of
SDUSD-sponsored bill to keep students safe. (AB 680
awaits Governor’s action.)
