The Great Gatsby
Please bring your book to class every day. There will be book checks. Expect a
quiz on the date that the reading is due. There will be reading journals, study guide
questions, and graphic organizers to help you understand and synthesize the
information. Your 2nd quarter book is due on 1/4, the day you return from break.
1/4: Individual book test.
1/5: Snacks. Begin Fitzgerald video (take notes).
1/6: Finish video. Give out books and materials. Collect notes.
1/7: Webquest in 103. Homework: Finish web quest.
1/8: Begin reading Ch. 1 in class. Homework: Finish Ch. 1 and study guide
questions. Work on study guide questions as you read.
1/11: Quiz? Great Gatsby powerpoint. Discuss Ch. 1.
1/12: Modernism/Group worksheet. Read American Dream article and answer
questions. Homework: Finish questions.

Target List

o Analyze the historical, cultural, and social context of the setting and
its importance to the story/text.
o Answer literal, inferential, evaluative and synthesizing questions to
demonstrate comprehension of the novel.
o Analyze Fitzgerald’s use of point of view, mood, and tone.
o Explain “modernism” as a literary movement and identify
characteristics of modernism in The Great Gatsby.
o Compose journal responses to make observations about characters,
plot, setting, author’s purpose, etc… and respond to questions in a
study guide as a way to monitor and enrich reading process.
o Explain how Fitzgerald uses symbols to created broader meanings in
the story (the green light, Valley of Ashes, East Egg/West Egg, eyes
of TJ Eckleburg, use of colors yellow, blue, and white).
o Explain ways in which Fitzgerald develops style (figurative language,
choice of narrator, temporal order, etc…) and cite specific examples
from the text.
o Identify and use textual evidence to support interpretation of some
aspect of the novel.
