Course Objectives At the end of this course, the student will be able to: Describe essential computer concepts such as the different types of computers, the components of a computer system, and the types of system software. Perform basic tasks in Windows 7 such as run software programs, switch between them, and navigate through windows using the controls and dialog boxes Perform basic file management tasks such as organizing, copying, deleting, and moving files. Create and work with professional-looking documents, spreadsheets, and presentations Create documents that integrate and utilize features of other Microsoft Office 2010 applications Explore and utilize the new features in Office 2010 such as Backstage view, editing photos in Word, creating sparklines in Excel and broadcasting a PowerPoint presentation on the Internet Required Materials: 1. If you purchase the book from the ENMU bookstore using the above ISBN#, the SAM key is available as a package with the new textbook and is a much cheaper price to purchase the bundled version. If purchasing a used Office 2010 textbook, you will need to purchase SAM Office 2010 student Key Code from the ENMU bookstore or by going b Web Links for the link to purchase the student code, however it is much more expensive to purchase the SAM key separately. This grading database will only accept Microsoft Office 2010 file format. DO NOT BUY A “USED” SAM KEY CODE. YOU CAN ONLY USE THE CODE ONCE, AND ONCE USED, IT IS NO LONGER USEABLE. 2. Minimum Technical Skills To succeed in this class, you should be able to: • • • • • Access and navigate the web. Download and save data files from a website. Navigate BlackBoard, including accessing course content and submitting assignments. Use email and discussion boards to communicate with instructor as well as fellow classmates. Attach files for communication through email or discussion posts as well as when submitting assignments. Course Requirements You need access to Microsoft Office 2010 as the autograding software being used in the class (SAM) will only accept Microsoft Office 2010 file formats. If you don't have these products on your laptop/computer, these are available in the computer laboratories on campus at no extra charge. For lab hours, please check the ITS website at http://www.enmu.edu/services/its/labs. If you don't want to use the labs, you can buy a student version of Microsoft Office 2010 at http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx at a discounted price. All you need is your university email address. Not being able to finish your assignments because you don't have these software products will NOT be a valid excuse for late assignments. SAM Software: The institution code for this class is as follows (Case sensitive): T2036000. You will need this code in order to create your account in SAM. The instructions on how to create your account in SAM are located inside the Key Code booklet as well as in the course under the Course Content folder. Please read the instruction carefully before you attempt to create your account. If you have a problem creating your account, you will need to call 1-800-648-7450 and follow helpline instructions. SAM Assignments– all homework assignments for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are found in the SAM database. You will download the instruction file and the starter file for each assignment and SAVE to your computer or flash. Follow the instructions very carefully, SAM is very precise. On all homework assignments, you have the ability to edit your mistakes after each submission for grading. You can look at the graded report, make the necessary corrections and resubmit to SAM for re-grading. SAM will record the Highest Score on your submissions to SAM for grading. You have as many as five (5) submissions on each homework assignment. On SAM Exams, you have only three (3) attempts to get the correct answer per question. Please include your BlackBoard Username when you create your user profile as you register for SAM. Place your Bb User ID in the WebCT ID text block in the registration form using lower case letters PLEASE!! BlackBoard: BlackBoard allows you to use the Internet to: Transfer materials to and from the instructor Check grades Retrieve announcements, send and receive e-mails from fellow students and your instructor Participate in discussions in the Discussion Board. To log on, access Blackboard by going to the ENMU homepage, under “Current Student” click on the Blackboard link. Read the “Getting Started” section on the Blackboard login page. These instructions inform the student how to create and login to your Blackboard account. Once you have logged in to the course, you will see several links on the homepage for Blackboard help and resources. Click on the “Getting started in Blackboard” link and study this tutorial. This will explain how to use all the resources in Blackboard. . BlackBoard Discussion Board “Ask Your Colleagues”: The Discussion Board is to be used by all students to pose questions if you are having a problem understanding how to accomplish a particular task. If you cannot figure out how to do a particular task, post the problem to the Discussion Board. If you see a post and if you know how to assist your fellow student, post your response. Check BlackBoard often (several times daily) for Discussion Board posts and e-mails from your instructor. If someone post a question to the Discussion Board and no one responds in a timely fashion and/or incorrect information, I will monitor the posts answer questions and make necessary corrections. This can be an invaluable tool in assisting you on your homework. Tutoring: Is available to students at no extra charge in "The Alley" across from Ground Zero in the basement of the Campus Union. Call 562-2286 or 2842 are stop by to schedule an appointment. Evaluation and Grading Your course grade will be a composite of your performance on tutorials, quizzes, assignments, and exams. The individual assignments will test your knowledge of the concepts from the books. The class also includes a project. Detailed information about the project will be available as the semester progresses. There will also be three exams during this semester and a final exam. The book Tutorials will measure your proficiency in using different Microsoft Office 2010 applications. For each chapter of the textbook, you will be creating one or more documents. You will be required to turn in these document(s). This will ensure that you are going over the book material, before attempting to work on the SAM Assignments. You will be graded on these textbook Tutorials based on their completeness. For the homework Assignments, you will be using SAM to view the Assignment instructions online, download the starter file, and then work on it saved on your computer using the live application. Once you complete the Assignments, you can upload it to SAM for grading. The advantage with SAM is that you can view your results immediately! You can also make changes to the assignment if you are not happy with your score on that particular assignment. Due Dates for SAM Assignments are listed in the Tentative Course Schedule at the end of this syllabus. Assignments are due at 11:00 pm on the date specified on the schedule. No assignments will be accepted after the Cut Off Date in Blackboard without the approval of the Instructor. There will be four exams. The first exam will test your skills using Microsoft Word, the second exam will test your skills using Microsoft Excel, and the third exam will test your skill using Microsoft PowerPoint. The Final Exam is comprehensive. All exams will be administered using SAM. There will be no “makeup” assignments, quizzes, or exams without the consent of the Instructor and a reasonable excuse. Late Assignments: You are required to read the material listed in the syllabus. All assignments will be due on or before the due date listed in your syllabus and in BlackBoard for which they are assigned. Assignments are usually due Friday Night 11:00 pm of the week they are assigned, unless otherwise instructed by the Instructor. Quizzes are due Sunday Night of the week they are assigned. There will be no “makeup” quizzes or exams without the consent of your Instructor. In general, late assignments will not be accepted. However, if you have a legitimate excuse and you inform your Instructor in advance, exceptions may be granted. Forgetting to complete an assignment or not having access to the required resources is not a legitimate excuse. Points can be deducted for approved late assignments. Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty is unacceptable with the university and this course. Thus, students must assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. Submitting someone else’s work as your own The penalty for violating the honor code is severe. According to the ENMU catalog (ENMU Undergraduate catalog 2011 - 2013, p. 28), misrepresentation of knowledge can influence a course requirement. Cheating, plagiarism, or other acts of academic dishonesty compromise the integrity of the academic progress and community are subject to disciplinary action. An act of academic dishonesty, at the will of the University, may result both in grade changes and/or disciplinary actions.
