Summary
Gatsby’s party takes place (a very vivid description)
Nick attends Gatsby’s party, where he meets Jordan
Baker and talks to her
Nick goes into the library, where he meets an owleyed man
Nick meets Gatsby for the first time (and they talk
about WW1)
Gatsby leaves to answer a phone call, and calls
for Jordan (to talk to her alone)
Jordan comes back from the chat with Gatsby;
she taunts Nick about the "tantalizing" news
without revealing any of it.
Nick sees that a coupe leaving the driveway has
hit a wall and lost a wheel. The driver was
supposedly the owl-eyed man
The owl-eyed man is not the driver, some one
else is.
Nick falls into his work-eat-sleep routine and
Jordan doesn’t pop up again until mid-summer,
when they start hanging out together.
Nick insists that he isn’t in love with Jordan, just
curious.
Jordan lies about leaving the top down in a borrowed
convertible, and it jogs Nick’s memory about that
"story" he had been trying to remember regarding
Jordan: she may have cheated in a professional golf
tournament once.
Nick tells her to be careful, but Jordan says no, it’s
fine, as long as other people are careful drivers. She
says she hopes that she never meets a person as
careless as herself. "I hate careless people," she
tells Nick. "That’s why I like you."
With that conversation, Nick realizes he needs to
break things off with a certain girl back in
Chicago.
Nick then says everyone suspects himself of one
of the cardinal virtues – and he is one of the few
honest people he has ever known.
Jordan
Careless-Quote: ‘Nick tells her to be careful, but
Jordan says no, it’s fine, as long as other people are
careful drivers. She says she hopes that she never
meets a person as careless as herself. "I hate
careless people," she tells Nick. "That’s why I like
you.”’
Dishonest-Quote: ‘Jordan lies about leaving the top
down in a borrowed convertible’ and she may have
cheated in a professional golf tournament once
Playful- she taunts Nick about the news she
heard from Gatsby and doesn’t reveal any of the
news.
Nick
Arrogant- he says that he is one of the few
honest people he has ever known.
Observer- Nick watches a woman with red hair
singing along to a piano and weeping black
mascara tears. He also listens more than he
takes part in conversations or events.
Gatsby
Desperate- he throws large and luxurious parties
every weekend in hopes that Daisy will attend,
spending large amounts of money for every
party.
Quiet/Shy- not many people who attended the
party actually know who he is, have never talked
to him before or know his face.
Easy to talk to- Nick meets Gatsby who tells him
"you look familiar”, and they chat about having
both been in the war (WWI).
Themes
Luxury- the whole party is very elaborate and
luxurious (even a complete orchestra). The
parties are thrown most nights throughout the
summer. The party also had fancy, bright lights
and colorful dresses.
Gatsby has a huge library, which in all the books
are real, pages and all.
He has a butler and a piano.
‘Your own thoughts’
The whole scene was unnecessarily extravagant
and a lot of money was wasted for people that
Gatsby doesn’t even know. Considering that the
party was on most nights during the summer, a
massive amount of food and drinks had to be
provided.
Most of the people who attended the party
weren’t even invited, they just invited
themselves.
Jordan was also superficial and
